Which means that to me the offer of certainty, the offer of complete security, the offer of an impermeable faith that can\'t give way, is the offer of something not worth having.

He must've been thinking about the prohibition and how well that worked out when he came up with this  :-s

If they start over taxing food and drink there's going to be a black market.

Probably, yeah. Distributing crappy soda, most likely. And people will make their own. But most of them will be too lazy to bother and will just buy the more expensive soda.

It's the same with cigarettes. Which certainly beats the way drugs are handled.

Quote2. If we were to assume your claim has merit, then large sodas are WAY down on the last of things that should be illegal in order to fix the problem. Alcohol? Cigarettes? Firearms? Nope, we'll just take out large sized soft drinks and everything will be fine. It was an idiotic idea that would have done nothing to protect anyone from anything.

I didn't mean "should be made illegal". I meant "should be taxed more heavily to support people ruining their health". Which, incidentally, cigarettes and alcohol already are. For that exact reason.
Oh in that case, I'm with you. Taxing the bad stuff, and then actually using that money to help offset increased health care system burdens, is a very common sense idea. Which makes Bloomberg seem like an even larger idiot than he already is. A tax of $4 or so on all large soft drinks sold in the city would have sent the same 'hey this is bad for you message' he originally wanted to send and it would have also generated a ton of cash that could have been used to fund health care programs. Win/win. But no. He thought it was a better idea to just try to ban them. Moron.

Of course, if anyone really thinks the extra taxes are likely to go to improve health care and stay there, I've got a bridge right there in NYC for sale.

I'm out at the VA with a friend to sign him out after his colonosc...colonoscop...aashole test and surprisingly Palin will probably show up to greet 'the troops'..

Quote from: "hillbillyatheist"I pretty much disagree with this woman on almost everything but am I the only one that finds it petty to be attacking her on this issue?

For the record I drink like 8 coke Zero's a day. I even wrote a song about it.

If I hit a convenience store I go for the big gulps.

fuck Bloomberg. on this one issue I pretty much have to side with Palin.

the new york coke ban is just fucking stupid and wrong.

what do you think?

John, you are missing the bigger picture. OUR global economy is one of exploitation, not problem solving. In the case of food, what big business puts out is costing tax payers billions in health care costs, not just the ER or people without health care. But it is corporatism that allows health insurance companies to exploit their profit margins by making people sicker. Now I am not accusing a conspiracy here, just a corrosive climate. Although I am sure there are bad players in both the food industry and health care industry who don't give a fuck.

The amount of obesity and amount of sugar we consume is costing tax payers billions.

I get that people make choices and should have choices, but pure "libertarianism" is a utopia and it comes at the cost of the rest of us. You have to have regulations that foster  betterment not solely be focused on "I got mine".

We need a climate change in big business. We don't nor should we get rid of it, but we need globally is a priority shift away from extraction to problem solving.

really? so you're okay with the government banning cigarettes and beer too?

no. if you want to add a tax to such things to help off set the extra costs in healthcare those choices bring, fine, but to ban them? no.

like I said you can take my coke from my cold dead hands.

They could always stop subsidizing corn with our tax dollars so that the price of HFCS will go up and then it won't be so cheap to eat unhealthily. Maybe subsidize bok choy or something instead.

Damn it John, who is talking about a ban? You cant legally drive a monster truck as wide as a freeway down the free way, that is why we have standard size vehicles that are not wider than the lanes they drive in. And how would limiting the size of the soda or the amount of sugar in it be a ban? We also cant sell porn to children or beer to minors.

This is the same reaction car companies had to Nader when he pointed out how unsafe cars were. But after car companies pulled their heads out of their asses and regulation forced them to make safer cars, they learned they could make that a selling point.

So why cant a beverage company use that same marketing and innovation to make more healthy products? There is a difference between cant, and don't want to.

drinking a big gulp and child porn are not comparable.

lets put it another way. do you want to government limiting how many cigarettes you can smoke, or how much beer you can drink?

This is no different than the blue laws bible thumping states have.

secondly child porn and cars that take up two lanes effects other people in a very negative  way. me drinking a Big Gulp does not.

yeah it might make me less healthy and thus require a doctor, but so will not getting enough exercise. should we thus have exercise police?

how does only being able to buy a tiny coke become a selling point? I'm thirsty. its hot, I want a big coke. Forcing me to drink a small one is NOT a selling point.

Just as libertarians can go to far, so can nanny statism.

the government better stay the hell away from my cokes.
