Movies with politics in them are usually only viable within the context of the world of the movie it's made in. Like any of the James bond movies, or independence day.

Yeah, nobody does Bond like Sean Connery ;-)  Nobody takes down aliens like Will Smith ;-))

People want to see fantasy.  Political movies are too close to reality to be good movies.

thats why politics in such movies are always silly and fabricated, like having the president being a war hero flying a fighter jet againest aliens, or fighting werewolves. People wouldn't pay to see 2 hours of political discussion they can't tweet about at the time.

Fantasy outlives facts, because they are less boring.

I'm trying to think of good counterexamples... the political movies that don't go the silly and fabricated route generally speaking have the politics as a side or back story, not as the main plotline.  The main ones that come to mind are All the President's Men (which is probably more a journalism story than a politics story) and The Manchurian Candidate (which is more a Cold War story than a politics story).  And there are plenty of good movies about politicians, but they tend to stay away from the actual politics and focus on (an idealized version of) their private lives, like Sunrise at Campobello.

TV, the pickings are a little easier.  I haven't seen the US version, but the original British House of Cards (and its follow-ups To Play the King and The Final Cut) was fantastic without being fantasy per se.  I find it very easy to imagine a politician like Francis Urquhart.  And I would like to see A Very British Coup some time as well.

Seven Days In May ... is a good counterpart to The Manchurian Candidate.  But I don't consider them good theater, just good ideological triggering.  Mary Poppins is good theater.  Ars Verite is simply the local police crime sheet with the names changed to protect the guilty.

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull Shark-jumping training film.

Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark Hasn't aged well. Jones' flirtation with a young ... lady ... wouldn't make it through the censors these days. I did notice for the first time that the second unit director was Michael Moore*.

She was 15 at the time of her initial relationship with Indy, who was 10 years her senior.  Definitely broke the 'half your age plus seven' rule. At the time, Indy had 19-36 age socially acceptable range.  Should've waited 9 more years!  A 24-year-old with a 34-year-old is much more reasonable.

And here's a great quotable:

Marion:  "I was a child! I was in love! It was wrong and you knew it!"
Jones: "You knew what you were doing."

Hooboy, I'd love to see the movie blogs react to that!

The SJW haven't yet banned inappropriate innuendo, otherwise many movies will be culled.  What about all the old movies with people smoking?  Reeeee.

If you can do that ... then no true atheist (or Scotsman).  On the other hand, being able to do that makes you a good slave to a political party.

Neither slave nor Um "slave" will I be.  And of course, you do realize that atheists do not make slaves.  I will leave you to the tender mercies of the Scots.

DAMN, I just realized I missed Samurai Jack tonight.  Cartoon Channel 8 pm weekdays here.
