The basic premise is that there are creatures roaming the streets/countryside and if you see them, your survival instinct drops to zero and you almost immediately off yourself.  The creatures can mimic the voices of alive and dead people, tempting you to open your eyes.  "No big deal, I'll just blind myself"  But wait, there's more!  The creatures have human allies who can see without dying (a HUGE advantage over other humans) who will try to force you to see the creatures or try to kill you outright.  They're armed, organized, and actively hunting down human survivors.

To recap, you have to survive without relying on your sense of sight (every time you look at something outside, you're taking a big risk) while being actively hunted by other humans.  You can't fight and win, you can't run and win, you can't take shelter and win.  There's no viable strategy.  You're shit outta luck no matter what you do.
