Lately I've been really getting into one of my old school passions... old school hip hop that is heavily influenced by funk & soul and/or features instrumentation predominately sampled from older works. I had forgotten how many absolute bangers came out of the late 80s/early 90s, and when you listen to modern rap/hip-hop its night and day; it's really two completely different genres. Modern stuff is about 90% electronic and pioneering a new sound that didn't exist before, which isn't a bad thing... but there is something just so fucking satisfying about the classic DJ/MC style of music that is built on the back of the music that came before. Sampling is really becoming more and more a lost art.
