Guys, that American travel thing is a part of a series of American myths... It is a set along with 'Americans throw their kids out in the street at 18' and of course because of this 'Americans don't have relatives and relations', which goes on with 'It makes sense! They are a mix of many nations, they don't have one'...

Well, you guys do go to the market by car. You have no idea how incredible that is...

For me, 20-30 min is a trivial, routine trip.  45-60 is uncommon, but doable.  And 60+ is a long trip.

By train or by electric bike, my commute is a little over  50 minutes, one way.
Belgium is small and I live in one of it's biggest cities, but I still chose to work 17 miles from home.

Going by car would be faster, but it would cost gasoline, a parking spot and give me a lot more stress.
I prefer a longer bikeride, giving me time to clear my head.

If I don't wait for a bus -you often don't- it takes around 50 mins to go to downtown for me. Bus + Subway or Tram...And also for another downtown at the other side we have ferries and that could push the journey a little.

Did a three hundred mile trip (c. 1963) to leave Mom to take care of the Y-donor's mother. There and back in three days so we could make school that Monday. Neighbor met me and bro when we got off the bus that PM. "Get your things ready, you're going back to Missouri." One less Granny.

I'm two miles from the nearest market. In the summer the eggs would hatch before I got home with them.

I'm being facetious. It's just we have markets and supermarket in every block and those blocks are very small, we walk to them, because everywhere is relatively very near compared to yours. But of course there are big places people go by car in big cities.

I actually would prefer the European system, picking up tonight's meal on the way home during a (possibly) casual walk about the 'hood. I know my immediate neighbors, but a mile or more away there's nothing but strangers.

By Chinese law, posting this actually makes me an international terrorist. Also, Xi looks like Winnie the Po.
