The military life isn't for everyone. But for people who didn't get to the first rung of social improvement, but still have potential, it can be a first step, if not a career. Today, all these are Millennials, hence the worry by command that we are on a slippery slope. When the War on Terror started, they were X-gen.

Yes, a bunch of mostly young men in a barracks together, is called a gang. Not a Parisian salon nor afternoon tea.

Unlike the Vietnam War draft period, you are less likely to encounter Private Gomer Pyle. Though a few still slip thru. I have worked with them ;-) The military is the most functional socialism there is. They get nearly free health care. Relatively few are exposed to physical danger.

As opposed to the problems with welfare, military are expected to show up for work, on time, in uniform, groomed, fit, and do as they are told. People who can't do that, are unfit for society in any form, even drug gangs don't want you.
I served my regular Army hitch during the draft and Nam. Going to Nam was only a matter of time; but when I had finished my three year enlistment, I was still not there, I thanked my guardian angel and got out. If not for Nam, I'd have made the Army my career. But I was in Army Intelligence and could have gone into physical security as a Warrent Officer (a cross between a LT and NCO) and become expert in picking locks and keeping them from being picked. Warrents are enough of an odd-ball spot that most people left them alone. A W4 was regarded almost as the Sacred Uncle of whatever unit they were in and nobody fucked with them--they were regarded as a LTC for billiting, food and had the ability to go to both the Officers Club and NCO Club.
Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able?
Then he is not omnipotent,
Is he able but not willing?
Then whence cometh evil?
Is he neither able or willing?
Then why call him god?

LBJ was evil on many levels. Not only was Vietnam the wrong war, but it was run with complete incompetence (substituting technology and fake body counts for leadership). I always oppose war, unless it is absolutely necessary. In our post Cold War period, going thru the fake War on Terror (perpetual war) and now going back to a Cold War 2.0 that may get hot ... you can imagine my disappointment. Both R & D are the uni-war party ;-((

But there would be people, in any age, even with a justifiable war, who are too anti-social to be allowed to roam free. Pacifist I am not, but neither am I a sociopath.

G-d slaughters 100% of all life, individually and as species.

Nobody except Greek-based theologians said, G-d was perfect. The original ... Zeus ... was quite imperfect. Let's go back to Zeus, where you can't keep the chief of the Olympians from chasing after human females ;-)

Pirates ... being on the water all the time, you get too much sun, and they hadn't invented sun-screen yet ;-0

We 'new atheists' have a reputation for being militant, but make no mistake we didn't start this war. If you want to place blame put it on the the religious zealots who have been poisoning the minds of the young for a long long time."
