My ancestors changed their last names when they hit Ellis Island. Our original family history ends there.

I can certainly understand the excitement the immigrants must have felt. Within 10 years my Romanian grandparents owned and operated a general store in NYC. It would have been interesting to me to have the opportunity to know more about the old country or maybe learn a few languages when I was very young. It must have been pretty bad, since they used all of their money to board the Cunard ship, RMS Pannonia at Trieste and venture to a new world. Everything I know about them is from the ship's passenger list (and that immigration officer had terrible penmanship, LOL) and a few photos. I read that most immigrants were processed within a few hours if they passed the medical exam.
They had their debates over immigration back then as well..

Veterans before refugees! Because there's no way we can help both! Nope! We can only help one group of people at a time, and everyone else is just fucked until we're through! /s

Also, it's socialism if the veteran gets help and therefore verboten (though one wonders how wars are funded).  Thus speaks the politicians with socialized healthcare and the wealthy who can afford the best of care out of pocket.

The cartoon doesn't mention veterans. Just sayin'.

I thought it showed immigrants taken to the army as soon as they step on land without much choice, no? I mean if you were straving in the old world, and came to US with family, most men would go without question to send money to their families.

No, it's the same as the GOP's "immigrants come to the US to take our jobs and live off welfare." "Army" is shorthand for a mass of people in this case, and an attempt to dignify the American unemployed. Not that it's "Flood" vs. "Army". (We looked at similar when I was at Purdue.

🎵 Internet heroes of genius 🎶
Today, we salute you, political nut with a sub-elementary understanding of biology.
What you lack in knowledge, you make up for in bravado.
You don't know the meaning of surrender
Because books are for nerds.
So fearlessly walk through that patch of poison ivy
And into our twitter feeds, you brave warrior
While your compatriots may die by the score,
Your ignorance never will.

Bass, a deep voice or sound.
Bass, a big mouth fish.

It took me a minute.

I didn't get anything from this.
It's a pun.  Bass is a type of fish and bass (pronounced base) is low pitch sound.
