Gotham just strokes me as a depressing place to live, it's perpetually dark there, even in the daytime. In the animated series in the 90s there were a couple of examples of batman operating in the daytime, like when he's investigating poison ivy claiming to have retired from crime and now living in the suburbs of gotham away from the city, and it really made him stand out awkwardly trying to hide in a tree in broad daylight.

The setting of gothem has always been in batman favour due to its darker location, high buildings and gothic architecture creating a darker underbelly just perfect for his design.

This is what made a sequel series to batman the animated series, called batman beyond, an interesting premise. Set like 40 years in the future from the original, a new younger batman taking up the mantle, set in a more futuristic version of gotham with new architecture, it see we to be able to mix day and night times better, looking more like metropolis times from the superman series, kinda like a setting like Tokyo. This is why batman beyond used new technology like a suit that could make him invisible and glide with rockets in the boots more viable.
