Wait. Japan doesn't have a military? Like at all?
Japan has a military whose role is limited in the form of the Japan Self-Defense Forces (JSDF).  It's enough for peacekeeping operations (mostly in a support role), but not enough for out-and-out war on the scale of WWII.

Over the years, there have been grumblings to expand its military capabilities (given the Cold War and slow-burning North Korea situation post Cold War, it's understandable) and rework its policy of self-defense to allow for more abstract forms of self-defense.

Japan has also mulled acquiring nuclear weapons (which seems odd, given its history) and while it technically doesn't have nuclear missiles right now, it could easily produce them should the need arise.  Japan's like the pyrotechnics guy at a concert.  Technically, everything he's doing is legal and perfectly fine.  But if you piss him off, he could burn down half the city in a heartbeat.

It's not "very limited". Its role is limited.

Correct.  Good point.  That could have been misleading.

I sailed with the JMSDF when I was stationed in Japan back in the '80s. They were sharp, as you would expect. Spooky to see the Imperial battle flag flying from ships just across the pier.

Primarily about keeping property in the family.  If the daughter can inherit ... then she has to marry within the family.

Same reason the RCC didn't want it's priests to marry, so they'd die and leave the Church whatever property they had, since there'd be no one else to inherit it.

Property ownership wasn't clear back then.  It became habitual for the families of priests to inherit (alienate) church property.  The Church losing more and more control of their assets each year.  Married priests would have complicated this even more.
