I just saw the original Willkins and Wontkins proto-muppets; there's a touring Henson exhibition that's currently visiting our local science museum.

I did not expect the emotional hit from seeing used-in-production Muppets in "person", as it were.  But then, they're rooted deep in my childhood... and Henson and his team gave them more life and personality and character than some actual human beings I know.  Seeing a "real" Kermit was especially tricky (bring kleenex for this link).
