Emoticons, serve the same purpose as a facial expression does, in person: they help convey the emotional intent of the statement, so that it will not be mistaken as hostile.

I have worked hard, for 18 months, to maintain an average of 17 posts per day.  And that doesn't include reading and "likes".  I work like a Trojan around here.
