So I turned 18 about a month ago and got a tattoo that I had planned for for over a year. It is a yin yang with a straight black and white (my skin color lol) sun coming out of it. I think it's quite beautiful but I will skip to the point...

I was at the pool today with my girl enjoying a beautiful day and this lady, probably around 35ish, comes up to us and begins to talk about Jesus of course. Then she says that I must have strong faith to get myself tattooed with my yin yang. I of course ask why and then she tells me that yin and yang are symbolic of Male and Female being one body and she equates this to Mary and Jesus and the whole virgin birth bullshit. I was so fucking offended but, being a closeted atheist had to argue my point without revealing my true religious stance. I told her that she was misinformed and that yin yang had originated in Taoism. And yes, she did indeed ask what Taoism was...... At this point I am literally about to punch this bitch in the face. She keeps talking and talking and talking. I finally just grab my girlfriend by the hand and walk to the other side of the pool.

It really should be a crime to be that fucking ignorant. This was a full 8 hours ago and I'm still sitting here wondering how the fuck someone can be that god damn stupid.

EDIT: here is a picture of the tattoo I have http://distilleryimage8.s3.amazonaws.co ... 9be5_6.jpg

And the Buddhist wheel symbolizes that Jesus is always at the helm.   :P

Sorry, but I laughed when I read this.

They can be brought up in a home in which they're taught, from birth, that thinking is a sin.  You don't want to be a sinner, do you? [-X

Oh for cryin' out loud. This lady is WAAAAAAY off. Yin and Yang have nothing to do with western culture whatsoever. It is an Asian philosophy of balance in nature.

The symbol is 700 years older than christianity. This just another example of uneducated moronic christians trying to hijack something that is popular and misdefining for their own political purposes!

ApostateLois

This is a great example of Christians trying to "Christianize" a symbol to make it less offensive to them. They stole the cross, the fish, the sun, and every other symbol from other religions, and just can't imagine ANY symbol not being about Jesus in some way. They even claim the pentagram for Satan, who is really just another of their deities (even though he is a bad deity).

Yep the only thing they didn't steal is the pentagram - which was There's to begin with.   Derrrrr

The oldest yin-yang is actually Roman and Celtic. The Celtic version dates back as far as possibly the 5th century B.C.E, though it lacked the dots. Bellow is the Roman version.

That said, when we use the yin-yang we commonly think of the Asian meaning behind it.

What would be REALLY funny is if it was a Leviticus 19:28 tattoo.

But yeah, yin and yang has roots in eastern religions to symbolize universal balance.

Well, I stand corrected in the root of yin and yang.

Shiranu

To be fair again, the one we use IS the Asian Yin & Yang. But like the cross, it predates the religion/philosophy it is associated with (Cross obvious as a tool of execution, but the Celtics and other groups have used the cross motif before the Roman's used it to execute and long before Christianity was exposed to them).

But even using that argument, I don't think the Roman version had anything to do with Christianity, nor the Celtic.
