Sonar that can see down to hydrothermal vents (2+ miles through a few thermoclines)?  Evidently the writer has no idea how sonar works.  If it's not a spoof, it's plain bullshit.

"It makes sense, if you think about it, because that is the only place where conditions have been more or less stable for billions of years. Extremophiles may live at different temperatures than us, but they have been able to thrive and develop intelligence at a seemingly accelerated rate. That's not true, because they've simply evolved at the same rate, but without many of the vicissitudes which set back surface life . . ."

Well that's a pretty amateurish understanding of evolution right there.

It's also false, because the oceans have also changed a lot in the past few billion years. Also, extremophiles are all bacteria because larger creatures don't seem to be able to survive in real extreme conditions.

QuoteAt the Chronicle.SU, we take truth seriously. We take what we do so seriusly, untruths at chronicle.su are punishable by mutilation or death.

Sadly, chronicle.su is not of this earth. After crash landing in an asteroid December 30th, 1976, the alien husks of Chronicle editors rapidly adapted to Earth climates and bacterial flora. They are able to survive naturally in the wild and reproduce freely.

Here at chronicle.su, we take a liberal stance on drug abuse and theft of intellectual property, but that does not mean we are liberal because liberals are faggots and I ain't no steer-boatin' queer!

Receiving tweets twice daily via fax from religious advisers impregnates our right-wing furnace of hate, enabling us to bring you the most horrifyingly sensational headlines you've ever seen, or your money back – guaranteed!

It took about a billion years for the algae to get almost all of the iron out of the oceans.

And into Australia.  :-D
We 'new atheists' have a reputation for being militant, but make no mistake  we didn't start this war. If you want to place blame put it on the the religious zealots who have been poisoning the minds of the  young for a long long time."

Here is what the government doesn't want you to know about that was released by Snowden:

For what it's worth, I was assigned to the NSA in the eighties, and the only thing I heard about UFOs was speculation that some of our surveillance tech could be the cause of some of the sightings.

Most, but not all.  Tube worms and crabs at thermal vents, Antarctic krill, icebugs.

Water bears are an extreme example of extremophile - while they couldn't live on the sun, that's probably the only place that would kill them.  Space, boiling water, liquid nitrogen, lack of food, higher pressure than exists anywhere on the surface of Earth (including the Marianas Trench), radiation that would kill cockroaches - and they're animals, not bacteria.  Drop a few on Enceladus and they'd probably survive nicely.

Colanth and Plu,
From what I can gather from various nature shows the main reason the ocean bottom is almost devoid of bigger stuff is the fact that there is so little to eat down there. same for the middle of the ocean predators.  The great White sharks mostly fallow the contours of the continents eating the bigger end of the swimmy things that hang out there for example.
