Projections for April 1 in the US showing that even with the vaccine we are only a little more than halfway (60%) done with all the dying (567,000 estimated dead).

Without the vaccine we would certainly be headed for a second nightmarish winter in 2021. There would be millions of casualties because we are nowhere near 80-90% herd immunity levels thought to be required now. We are only at 21M infected out of 328M population, not even near 10%.

Let us assume an 85% number for herd immunity and a 2.5% death rate (It is ~3% but it has been improving). We would have (328-21M) x 0.85 x 0.025 = >6 Million dead Americans to achieve herd immunity without vaccines.

I don't think enough attention has been given to the "long haulers" who will be living with health issues for who knows how long. That's why Trump and the GOP have been trying so hard to allow insurance companies to cut off people with pre-existing conditions.

Unless general tax payers pay for pre-existing conditions, insurance companies can't afford to cover them.  Hence the ACA to broaden the coverage to healthy people (like SSN, you pay now in the hope that in 40 years you will get payback).  Someone has to pay, and China won't.  For now, pre-existing conditions are covered under ACA.  I don't expect many private plans do, for the reason I mentioned.
