Could be facing power outages here due to lack of staff in power plants operating and maintaining things.

I got candles, matches, and a power bank for my phone at the ready. thing I'm most worried about is the fridge and all the stuff stocked up in there.

Interesting in a time like this, the drive in theater would become popular again. Long as people stay in their cars.

Also, a 101 year old woman recovered from the virus, even with having breathing difficulties.

In the long run, given how everything in modern life is connected to everything else, at some point the failure to fix something, has domino effects.  We can hope that things won't get that bad.  We can hope that the front line, the medical workers, don't collapse from co-infection.

I am not a survivalist, never REALLY think things will ever get that bad in my lifetime (yeah, just nuclear apocalypse).  I have moved from having one week of supplies, to having two weeks of supplies, given that the shutdown has been extended, and so the risk of breakdown is increased.

I was just thinking about this, and just saw it trending on Twitter (but in Florida instead of Texas)...

About 15 people I know have been applying for unemployment for over a week and a half, with no luck. The servers keep crashing, it won't accept information, etc. etc. . Apparently Florida is having the same issues, and my guess is that many states are going through the same.

The number of people who filed for unemployment a week ago, the "shockingly low number" that comforted investors but was still the largest in American history is an outright lie and I don't know how investors fell for it. It's not that only 3.3 million or whatever the number was applied for unemployment last week, it's that only 3.3 million were able to actually get the service to work or met the incredibly stringent requirements designed to fuck over the unemployed.

That number seemed incredibly low and it now should become more and more obvious why.

If they don't get this fixed and this goes on for too much longer... the more like tens of millions, probably closer to a hundred million+ Americans who are currently indefinitely out of work start to grow more and more desperate for food and who cant make the payments on their houses, utilities, cars... they will become much harder to ccontrol.

Today we had the first COVID-19 death in the hospital where I work. Yesterday there were 5 COVID patients in the hospital and today there are 12 with 11 intubated. Here we go.
You are the only hospital person I know.  I'd like it if you kept us updated, since you are kind of close by.  My county does not yet have an identified COVID case, but I'm guessing there is some around.

I called my ex in Montana last night because of the earthquake in Idaho.  She didn't feel it, but she said that she and four other friends of hers have been battling a severe flu like sickness that lasts for about two weeks.  The symptoms sound like COVID (dry cough and fever), but she and her friends have all tested negative.  So now there's this other thing afoot.

You follow Twitter?  That explains everything about you ;-)

Yes, if the lockdown spreads and continues, we will have 80% unemployment.  For some people, this is a cause for celebration (low paid workers are losers anyway, right?).  We socially judge people as success (wealthy) and as failures (poor).  This judgement is our undoing.  Identity politics is just inverted bigotry.  Got Wakanda?

Non-US Covid News:

"Putin Self-Isolates After Shaking Hands With Infected Doctor At Moscow Hospital" .. should have kept that hazmat suit on!

"Russia Sends "Very, Very Large Planeload" Of Masks, Medical Equipment To US" ... China and Russia have helped Italy (though Chinese masks are crap).  Those two "enemies" are the only two countries trying to help other countries (for evil intent of course).

"UN Warns COVID-19 Outbreak Is "Most Challenging Crisis Since WWII" As Germany Extends Lockdown to April 19" ... UN is so helpful now.

"Spanish Government Being Sued For Encouraging Mass Gatherings Right As COVID-19 Hit" ... women's day parade etc.

"'Relax, Eat Out & Shop': China In Desperate Bid To Jump-Start Paralyzed Consumer Economy" ... dealing with second/third wave of Covid will hurt

"UK pubs hatch plan to become grocers" ... individual initiative.  The French are still looking for the forms to fill out ;-)

US Covid News:

""It's Hard To Envision That": Biden Doubts Democratic National Convention Will Go Forward As Planned" ... yes, back to smoke filled rooms.  Screw the primary voters.

"It's Happening: Oil Producers Are Now Paying Clients As Wyoming Sour Price Turns Negative" ... Covid is driving the economy down, which drives oil consumption down (in an already weak market).  Oil producers (Iraq, Iran, Saudi, Russia, US are in an old fashioned price war ... remember when there were 4 gas stations at one intersection, and they started to bid down the price of petrol?).  Wyoming Sour is oil sludge used to tar roadways.

I chatted with a friend who works as a librarian/technology resource specialist for a rural public school. She explained the nightmare of trying to continue elementary students' education online. She is in the process of finding, programming and sterilizing used Chromebooks for kids to use at home. Then there is the problem that some of these families do not have internet access. Spectrum Cable said they would offer free internet but that is only to customers who already have cable. The school is extending wifi coverage into the school parking lot so kids can sit in their parent's cars and do schoolwork. She said some of the parents are not at all tech-savvy and she is having to talk them through the process. She said everyone is frustrated, especially since no one has any idea when students will be able to return to the classroom.

Another friend is still working and has arranged for someone to watch her second-grader during the day. She said there are evenings when she comes home and just completes her daughter's online assignments because she doesn't have time to work all day and teach school. It's a challenge for everyone involved.

Mr.Obvious

So, while I do still work from home, I do have like Two to three hours of free time more every day now...

I could be using that to write stories or poems...

What I use it for is magic the gathering arena.

So much for my delusions of 'if only I had the time'.

A worthy cause, imo.  MTG is great entertainment.

Don't beat yourself up over using free time for leisure, especially during times like these.   Any respite is welcome, drawing a Respite is better still.
