My husband told me about a subreddit called "The Herman Cain Awards". It's exactly what you think it is, and the stories just like this just keep coming. Many times a day, over and over.

Yeah, I've just looked into that subreddit after reading your post. It looks horrible.

I wonder how they will look back at this centuries later. It reminds me the books I work on. This is going to be a huge topic of cultural history -mostly interdisciplinary studies- in the future. And those studies will go through phases in groups decade by decade. It will probably have an impact on social media laws too.

While i dont askew schadenfreude, i do agree that dwelling on this makes it more tragic than humorous. So are darwin awards, of course.
In any case, the gf's uncle is one of these misled twats. I don't want the man to die, obviously. But i really do hope he gets to understand the severity of the situation. Catching covid, not dying and to being permantly affected, but getting quite ill for a while would  seem like poetic justice.

It's not like filming someone getting hit by a bus and laughing.  It's more like telling people for what seems like decades to not play on the train tracks, have professional train drivers come on tv imploring people to not play on train tracks, putting up giant signs to not play on the train tracks, and then watching some people play on the train tracks while saying that trains aren't real and hardly anyone gets killed by trains, whipping out a camera, and then shouting that you shouldn't play on train tracks and this is why.

Maybe a more accurate word than humorous is "ironic."  Maybe for some people it is funny and nothing else, but there is a term that is applicable according to Webster "gallows humor: humor that makes fun of a life-threatening, disastrous, or terrifying situation."

So how should we react to the twisted politicized maniacal ravings of the anti-vaxers?  My outward reaction doesn't reflect my inner disturbance, which is not humor, but outrage.  But I'm not going to give them the satisfaction of knowing how they truly grate on my emotions.  So I throw up my hands in helplessness and react with gallows humor.

I don't want them to die, or even get sick, but there is nothing I can do for these knot heads.  Do they deserve what they get?  I don't know about that, but they cause what they get, and I'm quite sure about that.  I don't think this is funny, but I admit fully to my own outrage and frustration.  They are not only hurting themselves.  They are killing others at a rate that goes way beyond our gun happy mass shooters.

OMG!  I just joined the Herman Cain subreddit.  I feel like I've soiled myself, but not because it's so horrible.  It is what it is, funny, sad, or disturbing.  It does make a good point, no matter how you react to it.  I guess the best description of my reaction would be "interesting."  Now I've got a reddit account that I don't know what to do with.

At first I smiled a little and then as I kept scrolling and read the stories, I went from very slightly amused to horrified and disgusted.

We behaved the EXACT SAME WAY during the Spanish flu epidemic, exactly. If you read about it, the similarities are quite chilling. I don't believe we were quite as politically divided at the time, but we did have the same bullshit assholes spreading deadly lies.
