I can't say I'm in love with the map. It appears to show population density as land became an official territory and/or state. If so that is a bit misleading because people were moving into most of those areas well ahead of what is show on the map. Not to mention the natives that were already there.

I'll accept that as a general population change.  Rather nicely done.  I've bookmarked it.
