This is capitalism in the modern age:

QuoteCorporations have created a new kind of marketplace out of our private human experiences. That is the conclusion of an explosive new book that argues big tech platforms like Facebook and Google are elephant poachers, and our personal data is ivory tusks. Author Shoshana Zuboff writes in “The Age of Surveillance Capitalism: The Fight for a Human Future at the New Frontier of Power”: “At its core, surveillance capitalism is parasitic and self-referential. It revives Karl Marx’s old image of capitalism as a vampire that feeds on labor, but with an unexpected turn. Instead of labor, surveillance capitalism feeds on every aspect of every human’s experience.”

This is capitalism in the modern age:

Governments do not really love socialism (though some individual leaders find is "useful").  Governments work on inequality, depending on the most powerful elements of society to keep the leaders in control. And that is "powerful" not "most needing" or "most beneficial"..

There is an astonishingly powerful article in the November 2018 issue of Scientific American that discusses the causes and consequences of inequality titled 'A Rigged Economy'.  It blew my socks off...

Yeah, I read that. It was most interesting.

You are one of my favorite people here (among a handful) but that comment was like a wing-shot duck.  Care to add more thoughts?

Well, the inequality we're experiencing now was very much predicable, so no one should be surprised by it. But if it's allowed to continue or get worse, then the rich will have to devise ways of getting rid of the poor, because the rich believe the world belongs to them.

The poor don't want to be taken care of, they want meaningful jobs so they can take care of themselves and their families. When people can't feed their children they will do whatever it takes to get food for them, but that usually just get's them to prison and their children still have no food.

And when people are always seeing ads for things they have no hope of buying they get depressed and their mental and emotional health suffers greatly.

I have no idea what can be done about the growing inequality, since the rich hold all the cards, not just the aces. Voting is all we really have, and we can try to vote people into office that can do something, but I have little hope of that being effective. I've heard that there are 3 boxes we can use to change things: the soap box, the ballot box, and the ammunition box. It may soon be necessary to use the latter.

No more time for now, I'll be back later.

Thank you and hope to hear from you more later.

I agree.  The poor want to have jobs that support a family and offer hope for their children.  Middle class families want to rise and give their children a better future.  It is the modern creation of a "Have-By-Birth" upper-class that is causing much of the inequity and that has to be balanced to a greater degree than current tax laws require.

Thank you for your further thoughts. They helped me organize mine.

Congrats to both of you, maybe you are ready to leave the Great Society monastery?

The jobs aren't coming back.  We will be replaced by Chinese, just as Europeans are being replaced ... chattel don't get choices.

Ivanka Trump/Kushner says that Americans don't want any free stuff. But of course, that's why no one ever plays the lottery.

There is a certain degree of irony that such very wealthy people say that people don't want "free stuff".

1.  Very wealthy people don't NEED "free stuff".
2.  Few non-wealthy people GET "free stuff".
3.  Only the very wealthy GET free stuff (and they do).

A single million is far more than I could ever need.  My car is 12 years old and a bit beaten up, though (dings and a couple of dents).  I might go for a slight body work and paint job.  I never liked the basic black.  A forest green or deep blue would be nice.  But it doesn't really matter all that much.

I might invest in a start-up business if I liked the idea (don't bother offerring one, I'll find one myself from someone not expecting it.  - I'll know it when I see it).  Other than that, I'll sit on it and maybe have pizza delivered occasionally...  LOL!

I do plan to do some modest house renovations done this year.  The 32 year old asphault driveway should resurfaced, and the 25 year old wood floors could stand refinishing.  But that is such a bother and I'm not sure letting them go "natural" is all that bad.  I think I will definitely repaint the computer room and kitchen.
