My first roleplaying game was Morrowind.  Until then I was into war games (Panzer Blitz, Steel Panthers, Gettysburg--that sort of thing).  Then stumbled onto Morrowind and have been hooked ever since.  I have replayed Morrowing, Oblivion, Skyrim, FO3, New Vegas and FO4--and will probably go back and do it again for all of them.  Each had good and bad points, with the good outweighing the bad.  I imagine every game I play will be a collection of good and bad points, at least to me.  I do not expect a perfect game for me, since the company has to (or should want to) make it as fun for one group of players as the next.  The more universal it makes the game, the more sales and that allows (I hope) the next game to be even better.  The problem occurs with what the company deems as 'better'.  Bethesda does this better than most, I think.  At least from my own personal viewpoint, it does.

As a contrast, I loved and still do, Dragon Age Origins.  I really loved it.  The ability to chose a particular race and have different options because of that, made many play throughs more fun than usual.  The dialogue was very good and the romantic side of the game was exceptional.  I have played the hell out of that game and still enjoyed it greatly.  I was very much looking forward to DA 2.  But BioWare dumbed down that game.  It was okay, but they stepped away from the one element that made Origins special--the romance.  They were on to something but stepped away because of the masses which did not think nudity and/or romance were put on pressure to stop that.  They also took the same approach with the Mass Effect series.  I would really love to see a good attempt to make a real DAO 2 and not the watered down version they gave us.  I have no desire to replay the current DAO 2.

Apparently, Bethesda is under investigation for their return policy. Things just keep getting better and better. I didn't know this, but apparently Bethesda decided not to release the PC version of Fallout 76 on Steam, as they have with their other games in the past. Steam's return policy is that you can request a full refund up to 14 days after purchase, as long as you have played the game for less than two hours. Not the best, but still better than what Bethesda went with. Shortly before release, their refund policy changed, making it so that anyone who downloaded the gane was automatically disqualified for refunds. And they've apparently been autorejecting refunds without even looking to see if people did download the game. Their offer of $5 worth of in-game currency for the Power Armor Edition may have also been their attempt to cover their asses, as acceptance of this currency may be used as acceptance of the policy. It's similar to a trunk company offering small payment for injuries and damages, and the acceptance of that money disqualifying the victim from filing a lawsuit.

It was a "smart" idea in that they knew almost everyone would want a refund on that steaming pile of shit.

There are a lot of casual features I hate in Skyrim that I just know will carry over to the next game. Remember when we had an actual journal rather than the bullet point slides plainly telling you what to do? Heck, I wouldn't be very surprised if they removed even more skills and simplified it to just five skills: melee, archery, magic, armor, and thievery.

If anything like that happens, the godhead will awaken from its nightmare and TES will end.

Their $5 worth of in-game currency is functionally worthless.  You can't convert it to $5 - it just gives your account access to certain skins or other digital assets for the game.  That costs Bethesda nothing.  A refund costs Bethesda.  A lawsuit costs Bethseda.  Digital poker chips that can only be used at Casino Bethesda does not cost Bethesda.

Yanno, I don't want to be too down on Fallout 76 and Bethesda.  Some good things:  some of the creatures of Fallout 76 were actually pretty cool, especially the cryptids.  Flatwoods monster, Grafton monster, Mothman, Snallygaster, etc.

I feel bad for the people who worked really hard to create different, cool-looking enemies for a game that's pretty much DOA.

I want to try some combination of these mods so bad.  Maybe just the more aggressive and powerful enemies, everything you do costing stamina, and injuries.  That won't make the game impossible, just very punishing.

And it wasn't featured in the video, but there's also one that makes dragons far more threatening and varied.  If you see a dragon and don't flee right away, you're courting death.  A single flyby will take off half your health or more.  It's possible to win a fight, but it'll be a close victory.  This mod had me fearfully scanning the sky for dragons, paranoia doing almost as much damage than the actual threat.  I occasionally ran away from eagles in flight which I mistook for dragons.

Also realistic needs and diseases, which adds hunger, thirst, and sleep to the game while making disease far more pervasive and damaging.  Now, there's an actual reason to visit taverns, grocers, and shrines.

I attempted a survivalist playthrough with mods adding realistic needs such as food, water, warmth, etc. But it very quickly got on my nerves. The game doesn't isn't built like a survival game. What are you supposed to do when you need to cross a frozen lake to get a quest objective? Build a boat and take it across? Well, I hadn't seen any mods that did that, so I guess I'll just have to get hypothermia just to advance this plot. What if it's raining and the only shelter nearby is some NPC's house? Do you knock and ask if they'd mind you come inside to wait out the rain? Nope. All you can do is lockpick their door and break in.

The need to eat and drink became far too invasive as well, and worse yet, the weather. My god, the weather. I used one of the top endorsed mods that increased the diversity of the weather, which is supposed to make it more realistic. Since getting wet and/or cold meant getting a whole slew of debuffs and health problems, I would have to seek shelter every time it rained. And it rained a lot. Like constantly. There was one time I was climbing a mountain and it started to pour. I set up a camp and took shelter inside. But apparently, I didn't have the right kind of tent, so the water got in and made me wet. The fire just outside the tent, however, was drying me off, so I was in this loop of getting wet from the rain leaking in and getting relief from the fire. I sat there, waiting for the rain to end, for hours. Not in-game hours, mind you, REAL hours. It never let up. Rain does not work that way. It doesn't rain for days and days without end on a regular basis. Eventually, I just got pissed off and turned off my survival mods. You can imagine, when Bethesda eventually made official survival modes for Fallout 4 and Skyrim Special Edition, I didn't give a single fuck.

Yeah, Frostfall is a bit of a pain.  When survival mods become too burdensome, feel free to crank them down or uninstall them.

The one I use just makes it so you need to eat some food every few irl hours.  Or if you brawl some skeevers in the sewers, you might want to go visit a shrine afterwards or you're going have health issues.  Much more reasonable.
