Update on Texas Senate Race
« on: September 17, 2018, 02:06:59 AM »

Since Texas is one of the three most powerful States and dictates what happens across the country, I figure this is relevant news for our American posters.

It is just breaking that  Ted Cruz has been using "summons" envelops to hide advertising for his campaign and donation requests, but apparently this is not the first time he has done that this year. This is from back in May...

U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz recently issued a summons to potential supporters. It’s not really a summons. It’s a fundraising letter — as in, Cruz is summoning support. But the problem is the Cruz campaign has made the envelope look much like a legal summons, which can be pretty serious. A summons occurs when a person is sued or ordered to appear in court. Most people are probably not thrilled about getting such a summons.
A reader brought this mailer to our attention because she viewed it as misleading and intimidating. We reached out to the Cruz campaign and explained the concern. The Cruz campaign later provided the following statement:
...

No doubt, the fundraising letter, itself, is effective. But we think the Cruz campaign could do without the legal summons language on the envelope. It’s just too official looking. The envelope has two clear windows. Above those windows it says, “Summons Enclosed — Open Immediately” in bold letters.
In the top left corner, it says in small black print:
“Official Kerr County Summons
Voter Enrollment Campaign Division
Ted Cruz for Senate 2018”
Many people might notice that “Ted Cruz for Senate 2018” and, rightfully, assume this is just campaign mail. But many others might not get past the “Official Kerr County Summons” bit.
Cruz appears to be in a competitive race with U.S. Rep. Beto O’Rourke, D-El Paso. It’s understandable he would want to summon conservative support. But certainly his campaign can do that without making it look like a legal threat, right?

That's the shit progressives and liberals have to fight here in Texas just to have a chance.

No, let me take that back... that's the shit progressives, liberals, moderates, centralist, even Republican-lites have to fight in Texas to have a chance of beating the corrupt. If you ever wonder why America has problems, this is it right here.

Some kind of "franking"?  If so, you know that is how Congress-critters use the budget to benefit their re-election, right?  And of course the voters get the benefit of having a frank stuck up their you know what.

If I got one, I would chuckle at it.  You can see before you open it that it's a campaign tactic, but it seems like it skirts the ethics of false representation.  It's actually one of those things that could be prohibited by law.  I doubt that it is.

How in the world is this not illegal?  I'm pretty sure that if Dominoes Pizza sent adverts to people with "official county summons" at the top, there'd be a flurry of fines and/or lawsuits.

The fact that Ted "Liking stepmom porn on 9/11" Cruz is behind something like this doesn't surprise me.

Commercial enterprises do it too.  Federal XXX or US YYY ... but not part of the government.  Federal Reserve being the biggest lie of all.

But YOU chuckle at it because you are intelligent.  Not are voters are.

I would be happy with banning all self-promotion by any incumbents.

But, but, but, then we wouldn't have ANY partisan elected officials.  Not even on the Supreme (just using political in-slang there)...  How could the Nation non-function the way it does?

And I hate voting for judges.  They should be professionally appointed for limited terms by the local bar of their jurisdictions.  Voters are hardly competent to asses this.  I seem to recall that Texas is big on electing judges.  When I vote, I always vote against the incumbent judge.

Well, I always said the best form of government is a benevolent tyranny (gladly volunteer for the job - and I would be good at it), but democracy has worked well enough so far here and has a succession of leadership structurally.
