To say that something has gone "tits up" is basically the same meaning as saying that something has gone down the drain.

Given a basic assumption that all phrases make some sense at the time they were used, "down the drain" doesn't make any...

To say that something has gone "down the drain" is to say that something has gotten very bad or that something has gone from bad to worse, or to say that something has collapsed or become corrupt, etc.

That makes sense to say.

You asked what "tits up" meant. I explained that it had a similar meaning to "down the drain"... you then said that "down the drain" made no sense...  I then explained how it did make sense... you then respond with sarcasm and as if you already knew. Okay then.

"tits up" and "down the drain" have no logical connection.  That's all there was to my post.

What DOES "tits up" mean anyway?  I've never been able to make sense of that.  Field dressing a prey animal  ""teats up"?
I've always assumed it was exactly that.  Flat on your back dead.

Thank you.  A clear statement of logical original meaning...

I wasn't saying that they had a logical connection. I was saying that "tits up" has similar meaning to "down the drain."

If I say X has gone tits up... that's saying the same sort of thing as if I were to say that X has gone down the drain.

You said you've never understood what "tits up" meant... so I tried to explain the meaning of tits up to you.

OK, "I LIKE IKE".  Smart politician, too.  Trans US highways as "defense", LOL!

If you really hated Republicans, you would repudiate Lincoln too.  But you won't ...

Yes, but the turd isn't tits up right away.  It has to go down the drain first.  Then it ends up in the Thames River, where it is either a floater or a sinker (stinker).

"Tits up" probably comes from the same family of expressions as "belly up" â€" which makes a condition that applies to livestock (implying that the livestock is dead and no good or in a dire condition) to things other than livestock, and implying a similar condition.

"Down the drain" is giving up something for a loss, the same way you would give up on a washcloth that went down the drain of your toilet.

Metaphors are not really that hard.

Socialism and communism are different so they ought not to be lumped together.

There are forms of socialism that are very just. Free healthcare is an example.

And socialism isn't opposed to democracy... it's opposed to capitalism.

I am not particularly interested in the economic side of politics, I'm more interested in social issues, but when it comes to economy I think a mixture of socialism and capitalism is the best bet.

Socialism is collective ownership of the means of production.  Not a safety net.  Not welfare.  Not regulations.

Whenever Republicans use the word "Socialism" to criticize the safety net, there are many Democrats, Socialists, Greens, etc, quick to correct them on that point.  But whenever someone uses the word "Socialism" to praise the safety net, nobody except me corrects them.

If it is wrong to use it in criticism, it is wrong to use it in praise.
