Quote]I was talking to an older lady the other day and she said to me, “I don’t see why people think millennials are lazy. When I was younger, our education was cheap and the hospitals weren’t privatized, so our hospital bills were next to nothing. I paid less than $300 to have each of my kids. When my great granddaughter was born last year, the hospital bill my grandson received was almost $10,000. That was after what his insurance paid and he pays a lot for that insurance. Everything is just so expensive these days. I don’t see why people call this generation lazy. If I had to struggle the way you all do, I would be tired too. I watch my grandson try so hard and never get anywhere. Every mishap in life is devastating to him. A flat tire. A broken pipe. Even laying out a day of work can cost him his job or hurt him financially. It wasn’t like that back when we had unions. Y’all don’t even receive sick days anymore. I just don’t see how you all manage.”

I didn’t know what to say to all that. I just nodded and agreed, but here’s what I wanted to say:

We don’t manage. We struggle. We file bankruptcy before the age of 30 because of medical bills and yet still owe on student loans that never go away. We live in expensive, under maintained houses or apartments with 2-6 roommates at a time just to get by. My generation has the highest percentage of adults still living at home with their parents than any other generation and most of the couples that have their own place without roommates, have to apply for subsidies and still live from paycheck to paycheck. We pay what we can on our student loans, most of us knowing that they may never be paid off with what we make. Our college degrees mean little to nothing unless you “know someone” that can get you that big corporate job. There are not enough jobs to compensate for our degrees and most of them pay just barely above the minimum wage. Just to have a steady salary, we work extended hours. A minimum of 50 hours a week, most of the time more than 60-70. I’ve even pulled 120 hour weeks making the same low pay. We work harder and production is higher per employee than it has ever been, but we make little to nothing in the scheme of things. We have no idea what our future holds and how we will survive when we are too old to work. Our pensions have been stolen and the promise of social security that we once had is disappearing, not that it’s even enough to survive on anymore. Unless something is done about this archaic two party system in which both parties only look out for their rich donors, then there is no hope for us or the future generations. Our lives are already bleak enough. This generation is already giving up. Living in tiny homes and RVs, less and less people are having kids because we can’t afford to give them any kind of a decent life. Now the government is trying to prevent people from being able to make an RV or a tiny home into a permanent residence. They come after whatever we do to make our lives easier. They even try to prevent us from installing solar panels or collecting rainwater because they want the profits. We just want to survive and live some form of a happy life, even if it means living off the land again and giving up all modern amenities, but living off the grid is becoming illegal in most places. Hope is dwindling and most of the people in our earlier generations just want to call us lazy, or say we expect everything for free. They don’t want to see what’s happening and they sure don’t want to do anything to help. We don’t manage. We just try not to end up on the streets or in a gutter.

Fucking. Preach.That. Sermon.

And yes, I realise this is somewhat beating a dead horse, but to be fair this is beating a live generation everyday so... fair is fair.

Now all you need is a Draft, and get sent involuntarily to Vietnam ;-(

Yes, a few years before I was in college, if you were in-state in California, at a State college, tuition was free.  And gasoline was 25 cents per gallon.  A new car was $3000.  And $3 per hour was good money.  Inflation is real, even if the government likes to deny it.  The choice to inflate the money supply, to pay for Vietnam and welfare, was a choice.  When I was a kid, change was made of actual silver, not fakes.  LBJ, Nixon, Reagan, Bush Sr were all very bad for the economy.  The many wars and egregious government expenditures were necessary, and that is why the British pound and the US dollar aren't worth much as they were in 2014.  We could have kept the money strong, but at the cost of either not fighting wars (a good idea) or losing wars (a bad idea).  And while egregious government expenditures are always political, always controversial, I don't think that the Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid etc were total mistakes.  It would have been nice if they had been free of course.

Don't provide a link or anything, despite asking others to do so all the time

Also guess whatever provides narrative to you helps you feel good, but there is plenty of counter arguments to such things and proof why thing are better today

Are Millennials actually slackers?  Not the ones I know.  How is that for evidence?

All the accusations in the video, were ones leveled against Baby Boomers.  That is generational angst for you, in both directions.

My father was born in 1923 and I believe his generation had it harder than any since. The Great Depression, World War II, racial segregation... I can't even completely appreciate everything people went through back then. Talking with him makes me realize how easy I have had it. As a Gen Xer, I feel like I've been very fortunate, except for living through the peak of the AIDS crisis when my peers were getting sick and dying. I don't see Millennials as lazy but I do think Americans who are alive today don't always appreciate just how bad things could be. Honestly, I'm completely amazed that we haven't experienced a nuclear conflict.

its not a case of them being slackers, its telling of there being strong entitlement issue. I know people in that generation too who work hard, but theres plenty who have been like he calls out in the video.

exactly. it more just pisses me off seeing this generation complaining about hardships or that its the fault of the last generation for feeling this way. This lack of awareness and inability to emphasize with the past generation just pisses me off.

Socialism ... I sit on my butt toking, and the government pays me money for that ;-)  We had slackers in my generation too.

Every generation is like that ... were you "woke" to being your parents, when you were 20?  Eventually when Millennials are 40, they will be "woke" because  most of them will be parents, complaining about their own children.  Being meta as I am, I can step back and see this, so I don't give my daughter any unnecessary trouble for being who she is.

well i only got nephews so thats my brothers business not mine. But I do laugh sometimes at the irony of his convictions, he went from being someone who once stole from a store and got arrested from it, smoking pot anywhere he wanted, getting so drunk he needed friends to carry him home, and living the care free party life, to now being an authoritarian to his kids with strict rules and saying they are gonna follow his rules until they leave home.

I get that people grow up and change for others, it happens to us all, but I'm pretty free going with my nephews when looking after them, letting them watch whatever they want online (child lock on anything adult of course) or give them pizza for dinner or bake cupcakes for them, which often gets me told off by my brother for doing so. Just seems funny seeing someone 20 years prior defying authority, to being authoritarian.

What goes around, comes around.  How will being authoritarian with his sons, work out when he is elderly?

I'm 74 and I think old people are idiots and losers.  If anyone is going to save humanity and the planet, it sure as Hell ain't us.

Whether the younger generations can make it better remains to be seen, but it's good to remind them from time to time that they are a bunch of losers so they don't get over confident.

Google sent me this article today, probably because I clicked on Munch's video.

Catherine Baab-Muguira Failure to launch: Why so many American millennials feel adulthood is a lie-- Many younger Americans feel like the economic and emotional benefits promised by adulthood are overrated.

... As Malcolm Harris pointed out in his 2017 book “Kids These Days,” the best millennial slogan is the one that animated those protests: “Everything is fucked up and bullshit.” It sounds juvenile, even puerile, until you consider how true it can be. To my ear at least, it’s the cri de couer of the less deceived â€" less a complaint than an observation. ...

Besides, have you seen what’s passing for a grownup these days? Apparently believing and proliferating insane conspiracy theories or bullying coworkers on social media is par for the professional course. And the U.S. president is only the most prominent example. Before she was unceremoniously dumped by ABC, Roseanne Barr had spent years using social media as a platform for a slew of bigoted comments and ideas it would be generous to call far-fetched. Meanwhile, recently fired EPA administrator Scott Pruitt amassed a staggering list of alleged ethical violations while still enjoying praise from his boss for doing a “fantastic job.” And don’t get me started on Gen X-er Kanye West â€" because where to even begin?

Though Pew Research has no numbers on this, my sense is that grownups’ numbers are in steep decline. Fewer people than ever seem capable of discerning between fantasy and reality, which is something we generally rely on adults to do. “By my reckoning, the solidly reality-based are a minority, maybe a third of us but almost certainly fewer than half,” wrote Kurt Anderson in The Atlantic last year. ...

Everyone has always made issues in every generation. Social media makes this generations louder. And some of us who are my age, 23, which saw the recession and the decline of economy have come out different than others. Student loans and the college dream seems unrealistic these days but we do them anyway. Grit your teeth and get it done and abandon personal pride.

Sometimes you have to work a shit job that barely pays and deal with people who scream at you. Sometimes you have to lose sleep to get to work early or to write that important essay. Sometimes you have to decide between eating lunch today or saving to get your car fixed tomorrow.

These events happen and it’s natural to complain, and it’s admirable  to strive to change them. But to blame them on everyone else and expect handouts is selfish at least and insulting to people who are working back break as much as you are. The American spirit used to contain that grit your teeth and get through it mentality and to an extent it still does, people just need to be able to do it again while trying still to raise everyone up.
