Most people were illiterate, didn't care.  Most people lived on farms, didn't care for the city (aka civilization).  The Elite only cared for what was good for them ... power and money.

What is similar?  Pagan puritans, Christian puritans ... were intolerant.  And secular people were their common enemy.  We have the same sophists today.
