The Roman Republic had all the same problems we have today.  Though we handle slavery and blood sports differently.

The Optimates = republicans ... The Populares = democrats.

Naturally most of us do.  Hard to feel sorry for the patricians ...

Survival of civilization was a near run thing ...

Most people were illiterate, didn't care.  Most people lived on farms, didn't care for the city (aka civilization).  The Elite only cared for what was good for them ... power and money.

What is similar?  Pagan puritans, Christian puritans ... were intolerant.  And secular people were their common enemy.  We have the same sophists today.

More on the inability of the Republic to find fair solutions to their problems ...

You can't get solutions from people who are being paid to ignore changing times.  Napoleon was copying Caesar.
