Been awhile since I've seen one of these threads.

Can't say I missed them.

Dr. Strangelove, what a wonderful film.  I walked out of the theater in a daze.

That is because you don't worship our lord and savior ... Peter Sellers ;-)

Failsafe was much more serious, as was Seven Days In May.

I had a friend who continually brought up that Failsafe was the better movie.  Finally, another friend told him to quit that.  They were both good movies, one meant to be quirky comedy, and the other to be a thriller.  The juxtaposition of humor and horror in Strangelove was unique at the time.  Failsafe kept me on the edge of my seat.  How do you compare them?

Well, not everyone appreciated Peter Sellers.  Or Steve Martin.  Sometimes it is cringe-worthy.

Failsafe is based on (loosely) a very real incident.  Our first strategic military AI (automation).  When the Sage radar defense system was first turned on, so I was told, it went immediately on alert seeing a Soviet first strike in progress.  An object was approaching the US at 14,000 mph.  It was the Moon rising over the horizon!  Fortunately the nuclear response wasn't automated.

Dr Strangelove is based on the general craziness of automated weapons systems (which are a hot subject now) and Herman Kahn, a MIC analyst who wrote "On Thermonuclear War" ... which repudiates the MAD doctrine.  That and Operation Paperclip (Nazi scientists to the US).  General Curtis LeMay during the Kennedy admin was a vocal advocate for nuclear first strike against the Soviets ... he is the basis for the George C Scott character, General Turgidson.  The insane General Ripper who launches the SAC bombers ... is based on the ongoing paranoia regarding fluoridation of the water supply.  The Peter Sellers' character is the only sane person in the story.

Seven Days in May was a film JFK requested to be made, shortly before he was assassinated.  It is prophetic ... except it was other parts of the government that staged the coup ... the military's role was to be passive.

Steve Martin's remake of the Pink Panther was embarrassing.  I actually felt sorry for him.

A movie moment, for sure.  It will be his legacy.

My favorite line from the movie:

The bomb ride was the epitome of craziness.  And emblematic of the whole movie.

I'd actually forgotten that James Earl Jones was in that. It's been a while since I've watched it.

Forgotten anything James Earl Jones has ever been in?  You are excommunicated from Hollywood!
