Why Jews don't apply a part of mosaic law ?
« on: June 19, 2013, 08:39:05 AM »
I say that the Jews don't apply a part of mosaic law , I will explain why I think that.

1.I will quote a verses from the torah in Hebrew (Hebrew : ????).
2.I will quote the translations of this verse in 5 versions.
3.My commentary.

I will begin with (Leviticus 20:16).

Hebrew text :  ?????????? ??????? ????????? ?????????????????? ?????????? ??????? ???????????? ?????????????? ????????????????? ????? ????????? ?????????? ??????

Translations :

1.King James Version (Protestant bible with some archaic therms) : And if a woman approach unto any beast, and lie down thereto, thou shalt kill the woman, and the beast: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them.

2.Revised standard version catholic version edition (Catholic) : If a woman approaches any beast and lies with it, you shall kill the woman and the beast; they shall be put to death, their blood is upon them.

3.Wycliffe Bible (Use some archaic therms) : A woman that lieth under any beast, be she slain together with it; their blood be on them.

4.Darby Translation (Protestant) : And if a woman approach unto any beast to gender therewith, thou shalt kill the woman and the beast: they shall certainly be put to death; their blood is upon them.

5.Orthodox Jewish Bible (Messianic Jewish) : And if an isha approach unto any behemah, and lie down thereto, thou shalt kill the isha, and the beast; they shall surely be put to death; their dahm shall be upon them.

My commentary : The Jews say apply the mosaic law but if a Jew see a woman practise this kind of sexual relation , he will kill the woman or not ? I think that no because the majority of Jews will be just shocked and don't apply the mosaic law like this is illegal to kill a woman for that in a lot of countries.

I will share with you others verses an other day.

NOTE : If the system of notation of verses used is the system used by Christians this is by convention.
I prefer use the Christian system of notation like this is more simple for the majority of people.

I will quote another verse in the Leviticus. This verse is about adultery. (Leviticus 20:10).
I will do the same thing for Leviticus 20:16.

Hebrew text : ???????? ??????? ??????? ??????????? ?????? ??????? ???????? ??????????? ???????? ????????????? ????????? ??????????????

Translations :

1.King James Version (Protestant bible with some archaic therms) : And the man that committeth adultery with another man's wife, even he that committeth adultery with his neighbour's wife, the adulterer and the adulteress shall surely be put to death.

2.Revised standard version catholic version edition (Catholic) : If a man commits adultery with the wife of[a] his neighbor, both the adulterer and the adulteress shall be put to death.

3.Wycliffe Bible (Use some archaic therms) :

4.Darby Translation (Protestant) : And a man that committeth adultery with a man's wife, who committeth adultery with his neighbour's wife, -- the adulterer and the adulteress shall certainly be put to death.

5.Orthodox Jewish Bible (Messianic Jewish) :

My commentary : Again that is an evidence that Jews don't apply the mosaic law.

NOTE : If the system of notation of verses used is the system used by Christians this is by convention.
I prefer use the Christian system of notation like this is more simple for the majority of people.

The Old Testament is a voice for insanity and sadomasochism, With no bases in reality or what it's like to be a human being, but an insane cruel animal. It is the bases for the Christian and Islamic religions and has been used by those in power to justify every atrocity they commit and to control the masses for their benefit. Solitary

The Old Testament is loaded with cruel, arbitrary, nonsensical rules.  If a son talks back to his parents, he is to be stoned to death.  You can't eat pork or shellfish, you can't boil a calf in its mother's milk, you can't wear a garment of two different materials (like wool-polyester).  I'm told the Jews count 636 commandments therein.

Nobody obeys all the laws.

Many people don't obey the rules they're supposed to.  For example, you don't obey forum rules.

Much of religion is about tradition and a tip of the hat to clan loyalty rather than rigid application of scripture.  What may have been acceptable back in the bronze age ain't necessarily acceptable in 2013 no matter what the wingnuts say.  That goes for all the main religions.  The responsibility lies with the movers and shakers in each faith to ensure that interpretation of scripture is relevant to the age in which it is being interpreted.  You're always going to get a few that want to return to the dark ages, but you can bet your fat hairy ass that they won't apply said rules to themselves.  Hypocrisy is very much present with these types of people.

Also, there will always be people who criticize members of a faith because they don't adhere strictly to the letter of their scripture, and who also manage to criticize members of the same religion when they DO want to stick to the letter of their scripture.  Cognitive dissonance is alive and well among us atheists too - I've seen it a few times here, usually from the same person!

The behavior that I criticize is when religious people try to enforce some of their tenets on others (eg., persecuting homosexuals, atheists, women, etc.) using their religion as justification, but they themselves don't obey the major rules of their own religion.  It is the hypocrisy that I criticize.

If someone wants to pick and choose which rules he obeys, that's fine, but he then has no business enforcing his rules on others.

I know there are some things that the Jews don't do because they don't have the Temple. Other stuff I think is because secular morality is winning over religious morality.

The scary thing is, these laws are also apart of the Muslim faith & they actually apply them. Almost two billion people on this earth do not eat bacon & not only that, but they will also cut both of your hands if you steal. >.<

It was probably a good idea not to eat pork in biblical times because of the threat of trichinosis, however this shows how religious dogma doesn't change with times for the most part.    Solitary

Some do. Some don't. It largely depends on the nature of the government in a given country.  Islam has a wide diversity of belief and observance, much like other faiths.

My understanding of Judaism is that it is not applied literally. Torah is regarded as law and is interpreted. For example, "an eye for an eye," was understood early on to mean "the value of an eye for an eye," meaning that the offending party had to pay suitable compensation.

Also, Judaism had strict rules of evidence, making it hard in practice to kill people for sexual offenses.

It is important to understand that the Talmud, which may be understood as commentary on the Torah, has the last word on how the Torah is interpreted.  Hence, Judaism is in some respects much more liberal than a literal reading of the Torah would suggest.  However, Judaism can be much stricter than the Torah, also. Consider the requirements for separate milk and meat dishes and the extreme separation of women practiced by ultra-Orthodox Jewish sects.  These provisions are in the Talmud, but not the Torah.

Right. Judaism is made up of sects and different groups within its ranks just as Christianity and Islam are. There are liberal, modern thinking Jews and orthodox old school fundies.

I am close friends with a jewish family. The main tenet of judism is survival. If jews practiced every outdated unreasonable law, there wouldn't be any jews.
