Nation founders (Rashidun ... even if Muhammad wasn't historical) were violent men.  Was William the Conqueror a nice guy?  He was a Guy = French for Bill.

Islam was certainly a brutal religion, and is today.  But so was Christianity after they took over the old Roman Empire, moved into Germany later, and France.  Religions are, by nature, intolerant, bloodthirsty, and unforgiving.

A single deity means no variation, no room for discussion, and no acceptance of disparate views.

"Kill them all and let God sort them out"...
