Most everyone is familiar with De Rerum Natura if they have spent any time on the early philosophers, unfortunately the one page published most is the only part many of us have read. The "poem" itself is a novel and can be difficult to follow. For years I had the "essence" of the poem framed on whatever or wherever my desk was:

[Depending on the translation]

When prostrate upon earth lay human life....
Visibly trampled and foully crushed by religion who
meanwhile out of the heavens showed her face...
the first did a man of greece stand up to her.
the first was he to defy her.
To him neither heavens thunders nor lighting bolts
could quell ....

something something something...

ah..memories shot.
A humans desire to live is exceeded only by their willingness to die for another. Even god cannot equal this magnificent sacrifice. No god has the right to judge them.-first tenant of the Panotheust

Yes, what if religion were based on Epicureanism?
In fact, that was an option, and it still is. The problem is that it's no good for people who insist on a personal God. So I think the answer is that most people would abandon Epicureanism and make up another religion, which is what has appeared to have happened because most people ultimately    preferred Platonic fantasies.

It wouldn't work as a religion.  There's no fear for the hierarchy to use to force the peasants to support them.

Science builds skyscrapers, faith flies planes into them.
