Positive conditions developed a golden age, but politics, natural disaster, invasion and internal decline made possible the rise of Europe.  The Muslims were no longer strategically a threat.  Negative conditions can develop for multiple reasons, not just because of regressive theology.

The Europeans were extremely backward (500-1000), until Jewish scholars in Spain and Italy translated Arabic works into Latin in the 11th century.  By 600 W Europe was almost entirely illiterate aside from a few monks, and most of them being Irish.  The Christians knew no Arabic at that point.  However, there was a steady but small transfer of knowledge from Byzantium to Italy as well.  Greek Fire for instance, was kept as a State secret, so it never got to Europe, where it might have proven useful.  Modern numerals were invented in India, where Buddhists invented the zero.  Arabs acted as intermediaries in the transfer of modern numerals to Europe, along with paper and gunpowder (both Chinese inventions).  Like Japan 1860 - 1960 ... the W Europeans were very good at incorporating and improving the inventions of others.  Modern accounting for example, would have been impossible without the importation of modern numerals, and the rise of banking in Italy.  Oligarchy in N Italy, in particular, was responsible for the Renaissance.  It was somewhat later that Germans, Dutch and English merchants and bankers developed a power-house greater than the old Genoa/Venice axis.

One problem with being the center of the trade routes is that everyone else wants what you have...  And then you have to waste money on militaries.  And if enough peoples out of the trade game gang up, you lose.

Another insightful response.  That is exactly why the US (the 5%) must be destroyed by the Others (the 95%), because of the Dollar Advantage.  That is why everyone ganged up on the British Pound, and the British Empire (including the US).

More likely in 1864 when both sides in the US Civil War developed trench warfare that was used in WWI.  The US Civil War changed everything for Europe, but they didn't realize it then.  The day the Monitor and the Merrimac ironclads fought it was the end of all European wooden navies!

Well that would explain the events of 1965 ... already heading down even then!
