Apparently an interview that I did a few years back was actually used

You just gotta get beyond the starving part of being an artist.. That was just one of my reasons for dropping out..
"What do you want to be when you grow up?"
"A starving artist!" and I succeeded beyond my wildest expectations!

There has to be a balance between voluntary service to others, and self expression.

What are you doing?
Are you taking any medications?
Don't do that.

I used to make string art.  The "artist" part was good; I liked creating things.  But the "starving" part meant hamburger helper helper... So I found a paying job that challenged my creative instincts and paid WAY more... LOL!

I used to make string art as well--oh, so lonnnnng ago.  I even sold a few pieces. But I would have starved to death if I had tried to make that a career.

Prove to me that you know the most basic thing about string art.  What number of nails have you used for a circle?

Did you read that word I used in my post---'loonnnnnng'?  I actually taught string art in my school in '75 and '76 using nails, boards and burlap.  I also used pattern books to start with.  So, used the number of nails called for in the pattern.  Only toward the end did I go free-lance.  Then in '78 thru '81, as a teacher in my local juvenile hall, I taught it again.  Only this time I used strong poster paper and a needle to punch holes (couldn't use nails in the juvy) to string the string art.  The string art that resulted was not as vivid as the string art used with nails, but it worked.  Still don't remember the number of holes or nails used in a circle.  Remember, it was 'loonnnnnnng' ago.

I was so obsessed with string art decades ago that I convinced a security guard at a mall closed on Sunday (imagine how long ago THAT was) to let me in to look at an example in the store window.

And I finally figured out the secret to them.

Why will this not upload!?

" "

It won't accept my typed URL!

This is the format the board wants, so far I can tell.  What the HELL am I doing wrong?

I can't even put the string on the screen  Do the quotes work?  No, I can't even get it to show up in quotes!

cavebear, you have in your img bbcode "http://stringart.jpeg", which even after I removed the space between string and art, it does not point to anything. You need a proper img link.

If you can't live on the art, a day job is a good idea.  I studied politics while being a waiter for many months.

There's a huge difference between a starving artist and a political waiter.. Back when I was starving we didn't have day jobs. Unemployment in the area was off the charts to the point that employers could really pick and choose from employees willing to work for starvation wages..not to say there was any such thing as an unscrupulous employer.. Oh wait..yes, yes there was so I packed up and left town. Turns out that unscrupulous employers are everywhere..
Between that and exposure to lots and lots of toxic crap that pretty much works on destroying the central nervous system.. Of course I can take a lot of blame for being dumb enough to trust certain employers that the chemicals I was working with were perfectly safe..
Ok, I can see that my excuses for dropping out of the art scene aren't really working..It could be I just lost interest at some point along the way and wasn't able to get it back when I wanted to.. I've tried, but the part of my brain that could translate what I see to my fingertips just wasn't there anymore.. It sucks when I think about it so I try to not think about it too much. The fun part is there is never a shortage of friends and family members telling me to get back to doing the things that I couldn't make a living with all those years ago..  There just isn't a huge market for artist created pornography.. lol
All hail my new signature!

Admit it. You're secretly green with envy.

Sometimes you have to be able to hold a day job while you work out a book or something.  But if you can't hold a day job, you really have to think about  your value to society, LOL!  I mean you want to be an artist or writer, fine.

But society equally doesn't owe you support.  Do something to support yourself while you change the world with art or writing.

Cruel, isn't it?

What was true in the past, will be true again ... artists will have to suck up to merchant princes and the Papacy ... and make what the merchant princes and the Pope like (Agony & Ecstasy) or do without.
