Technically, a placebo in that case, should produce a result.  If both the regular patient and the placebo patient both get better, then the medicine isn't actually effective.

The placebo effect, like all psychological effects, are quite variable. It doesn't produce a reliable result. This is one of the reasons that they are unethical to give in lieu of an actual treatment.

It's also why you need to control for it. If you see an effect for a drug statistically significant from that of the placebo control, then you can fairly say that there is a real effect.

Usually.  But I am very drug resistant.  I'm the experimenter's outlier.  Infection-resistent, too.  Haven't had a cold or flu since 12.  And even then, when everyone had the Hong Kong flu in 1968, I got appendicitis, LOL!
