Trump's tax hike on solar panels threatens American jobs

QuoteIn the biggest blow he’s dealt to the renewable energy industry yet, President Donald Trump decided on Monday to slap tariffs on imported solar panels.

The U.S. will impose duties of as much as 30 percent on solar equipment made abroad, a move that threatens to handicap a $28 billion industry that relies on parts made abroad for 80 percent of its supply. Just the mere threat of tariffs has shaken solar developers in recent months, with some hoarding panels and others stalling projects in anticipation of higher costs. The Solar Energy Industries Association has projected tens of thousands of job losses in a sector that employed 260,000.

QuoteThe tariffs are just the latest action Trump has taken that undermine the economics of renewable energy. The administration has already decided to pull the U.S. out of the international Paris climate agreement, rolled back Obama-era regulations on power plant-emissions and passed sweeping tax reforms that constrained financing for solar and wind. The import taxes, however, will prove to be the most targeted strike on the industry yet.

Remember when Republicans used to be against government intervention in the "free" market?  Remember when Republicans used to be for growing American jobs?  Remember when Republicans used to be for energy independence?

Those days are over.  Do you want cheaper and safer energy?  Too bad.  Don't want the leaky XL pipeline snaking through your state?  Too bad.  Don't want risky offshore drilling anywhere near your beaches?  Too bad.  The oil industry uber alles.  If you and yours get screwed over in the process, too bad.

Yet another example of Republican hypocrisy. Even their own rules don't apply to them whenever it's convenient for them. Also, what the hell happened to Trump's supposed goal of creating jobs? So he saves a handful of coal miners their jobs, and then he takes tens of thousands of jobs away from clean energy? Does Trump smell his own bullshit?

Make America Dependent on Fossil Fuels Again!
And not just dependent on fossil fuels.  Dependent on the oil-rich Persian Gulf.

Hopefully, they'll spend our money wisely and not...oh look, there's a new war in the Middle East.  Oh look, now we "have" to send troops there to protect "our" interests.

Even from a purely nationalistic and security point of view, the Republicans should be all about renewables.

Basically, yes.

"Unreleased full-year coal employment data from the Mining Health and Safety Administration shows total U.S. coal mining jobs grew by 771 to 54,819 during Trump’s first year in office"

Creating a handful of dangerous jobs that won't be around much longer anyway at the expense of tens of thousands of stable jobs.  Someone needs to get this loon to read The Art of The Deal.

Actually the Chinese destroyed the domestic solar panel (photovoltaic) business, thru predatory mercantilism.  Are you all working for Mao's Little Red Book now?  Anybody know what happened to Obama vs Solyndra?

If Trump raised dead people, Dems would go around with wooden stakes and put them back in their graves.

Well, that all depends. Are are we talking rotten, brain eating zombies, or clean Jesus-like zombies?

There is protection FROM merchantile foreign practices and there is protectionism FOR domestic industries that use Government subsidies to compete at great profit.

When US industries pay more attention to R&D and industrial efficiency, and less to tax evasion as a source of profit to shareholders, US industries will thrive.

The Rest Of The World is beating us at our best game, and we have only ourselves (with a warped system of profits) to blame.  Time to get back to the basics.  Good products, competition, and fair wages.

Added:  It seems to me that we have forgotten that the basis of success is making things, not gaming the tax laws for profits to shareholders.

But if I make a joke ... it is a bad thing ... I recognize that as a joke, particularly given actual Christian theology, and the recent popularity of zombies on TV.

See, it isn't just anti-R party ... I get that too.  But basically pro-Chinese, pro-Muslim ... death to White folk thing, that people deny is where they are coming from.  I like the Chinese and the Muslims ... I just don't want them to kill the non-Chinese or non-Muslims.

But the question of tariffs and trade regulations is beyond anyone here, other than a knee-jerk reaction to hate-trump or hate-hillary.

The NWO folks, like Shiranu, are exactly the kind of idealists who will kill all of us with their idealism and kindness.

Chinese industrial espionage is real, and particularly our nuclear weapon technology.  But the biggest actor in industrial espionage is ... France.

Funny how these apes don't get the reference of their behavior to scenes from Planet Of The Apes.  Maybe they don't really believe Darwin.

2 minutes is way not enough time.  Trump has 3 years left to destroy the US political system and gain tens (hundreds) of millions of dollars for himself and family.

Still too early to judge him.
Yeah, we've got to give him the benefit of the doubt until he's had a chance to get the job done!
