Democrats win in 2017 elections, but don't rest on your laurels

QuoteAfter a year of high-profile moral victories in special congressional elections, Democrats finally got actual victories on the board, and more. They won big in Virginia, took full control of state government in New Jersey and Washington State, prevailed on an important ballot measure in Maine, and generally posted strong results across the nation.

Together, it was the clearest sign yet that college-educated white voters’ unhappiness with President Trump would jeopardize suburban Republicans in next year’s midterm elections.

But the biggest difference between Tuesday’s Democratic wins and the earlier Republican wins is deceptively simple: This time, elections were held on neutral or even Democratic-leaning terrain.

For that reason, it is not obvious that Tuesday’s performance represents a significant improvement over the Democrats’ showings earlier in the year.

QuoteIn statewide races, Virginia is increasingly blue: Hillary Clinton beat Donald Trump there by five points a year ago. And Trump’s ceaseless assault on propriety, decency and ethical, responsible government is supposedly firing up liberals as never before. Virginia on Tuesday was the place to demonstrate that.

QuoteTransgender candidate Danica Roem's win for a House of Delegates seat in Virginia is huge both symbolically and historically. The Democrat defeated a social conservative icon in Del. Bob Marshall (R), a 26-year incumbent who once called himself Virginia's “chief homophobe.” And she did it by about 10 points. She also becomes the first openly transgender candidate elected to a state legislature in American history.

In Minneapolis, meanwhile, Andrea Jenkins (D) became the first openly transgender candidate to win a city council seat in a major city. And in Pennsylvania, Tyler Titus became the first openly transgender person elected in state history by winning a seat on the Erie school board.

All in all, the results have been a pleasant surprise, especially in Virginia.  Christie is gone, presumably to sunbathe without further interruption.  And Maine voted to expand Medicaid, to boot.  Great night.

But we can't let up the pressure.  If we want our country back on a sane trajectory, we're going to have to fight for it.  We're going to have to call, canvas, and vote.  Vote with determination, and vote in droves.  Outvote the people who think climate change is a chinese hoax.  Outvote the people who want to deny affordable healthcare to Americans.  Outvote the people who applaud torture.  And outvote the chickenhawks itching to go to nuclear war.  Vote, vote, vote!

Yes, Communist Party congress party coming soon ... not.  You are helping to elect blue dog democrats, who will also sell any voter down the river.  Use fire to put out fire.

outvoting only works if people show up. 2010 the Dems didnt lose because people liked the Rebels more. They lost because too many Dems thought they could stay home
"Do you believe in god?", is not a proper English sentence. Unless you believe that, "Do you believe in apple?", is a proper English sentence.

It is complex like that.  But I could never vote 2010 for Dems, because ACA.  We really don't know why elections go one way or another, there are always multiple reasons.  A cargo cult is irrational, and we rationalize why John Frum didn't land with free goodies this year for the islanders.  New Hebridean islanders are divided too ... big nambas vs little nambas.  In 2016 too many Black voters stayed home, because Hillary wasn't Black.  Some Blacks voted for Trump.  Not pretty, but true.  That and Dems assume that Hispanics are liberal ... they are not.  Also by now identity politics is turning more people against the Democrats than it is gaining them (clue ... this only works if you stop men from voting or Whites from voting).  So what are Democrats doing about this?  Doubling down on the Clinton Cult.  Continue to do what isn't working, please!

Th Democrats won big last week for several reasons.  The independents who voted for Trump have slowly realized he is a complete lunatic, some of the Republicans decided he was worse than a Democrat, and many Democrats decided that they should vote.
