Hard work and grit for little to no pay, and keeping your head up and being optimistic about it the whole time, is intrinsically ingrained into American culture. The stiff upper lip of Brits, of putting your head down when the time comes and powering through what needs to be done, is legendary. And "German Work Ethic" is about as stereotypical of stereotype as exists amongst any culture.
Japan believes in hard work, that's true; it also believes in working so hard, without reprieve, that those who cant keep up need to just kill themselves because they are failures. That is not an ideal society to look up to. When your depression rate and suicide rate is as high as Japan's, then that is NOT a culture trait that needs to be emulated.
