Britain's Greatest Gift to America: John Oliver

If you haven't yet discovered HBO's "Last Week Tonight, with John Oliver," then you are missing out on the most important voice in America, since Jesus Christ. No matter how educated you think you are, he will enlighten you. He is the college teacher that you always dreamed of, who tells you everything you that you needed to know, on subjects you may not even realized that you cared about, and does it so concisely, that you can digest it in a single lesson, and at the same time, make you laugh your ass off, at the very moment that you were about to cry. If there is a supernatural "spirit of satire," then it is, unequivocally resting, at this moment in history, on John Oliver.

It is undoubtedly due, in part, to the fact that, unlike "late night comedians," who do a nightly show, he and his team have an entire week to research a subject, and condense it down to it's essence, before he makes fun of it.

I have learned, even more than I have laughed, watching him on youtube. I love Stephen Colbert, Seth Meyers, and the rest. But what John Oliver is using his "gift" for, is so far above those guys, he is in a league of his own. Hands down. He is literally, Britain's greatest gift to America, including The Beatles.

There are so many topics he has covered, that I think the best way to introduce him, is literally to start with a topic that you think that you couldn't care less about: NORTH DAKOTA...

If, from this most boring subject ever, you get a hint of this satirical genius' value, go youtube, and pick out a topic that actually interests you, from his impressive catalog of shows. Most are MUCH MORE INFORMATIVE, and at the same time, MUCH FUNNIER THAN THIS ONE.

Feel free to use you reply, to thank me... :thanx:

If the year is 2017 and you have a shitty opinion, I think that is perfectly relevant that you are still a neanderthal. Believe it or not, but not all of us are professional philosophers and actually have opinions for reasons other than, "If a = x then y is z.".

Also, that meme is the epitome of pot calling the kettle black.

Everything is better with an English accent ;-)  I like videos where English immigrants are trying to figure out the US while living here, or young English college students who are going to, or just back from, a one year sabbatical at an American college.  Like watching a Star Trek away-team trying to deal with a primitive planet they are visiting ;-)

In Montana, there has been a long tradition of North Dakota jokes, jokes about how dumb North Dakota is, and they are original jokes too, not just relabeled Polish jokes.  I never understood why this was a tradition.  There is no particular long standing animosity or competition between the two states.  If anything, there is more of a kinship.  Being from Montana or North Dakota is like being from one of two least important states in the country, and is often a matter of pride.  But there is something about North Dakota that is indefinable.  It's just a natural target to make jokes about.  I don't know why.

Isn't ND like Minnesota .. mostly Norwegian and Swedish derived Americans?  Maybe Montana has a different ancestry ... that and it was Big Copper's bitch.

Montana's ancestry is very similar, leaning toward Scandinavian.  Mining companies did run the place and still have a hold, but most of the copper connection is now just an ugly legacy of boom and bust centered around the mess left behind in Butte.  Copper is still mined in pockets around the state, but not on the scale that happened in Butte, and it is sometimes extracted as a secondary ore in silver mines.

When I first bought property in Montana, I found out that while people could own the land, the Anaconda Copper Company owned the mineral rights, which is kind of like the buyer not actually owning the land.  When I asked about how that happened, an old timer guessed it was some political "skullduggery" that gave it to the copper company.  The mineral right on privately owned land awarded to the Copper company still exists today and is probably an overreach of the 1872 Mining Act, which congress refuses to repeal.  The copper company wanted it all, and they got it.  Full ownership without the shadow of loss through mineral claims is rare where I lived, and that was 350 miles from the mines in Butte.  I assume it's true throughout the state, but I never looked into it.

On public lands, which make up the bulk of the west, any mining company can mine anywhere anytime.  After a lode was located the land could be purchased and price was set at $2.50 per acre, and the price is still in effect today, but you need to be a  mining company.  The law has been under attack for years, but Montana's sparse population is much too weak to go up against the mining giants in Congress. So, yeah Montana is Big Copper's bitch, but some would argue that logging has been more destructive, although without the toxic waste problem.

Having lived in Minnesota and visited Scandinavia, I know exactly why Scandinavians settled in and near Minnesota: other immigrants said "Hell no" to the homesteads available there, while the Scandinavians said "This is just like home and we know how to make things grow here."

Okaaaaay....? I honestly don't get the animosity...I clearly stated that this video is THE MOST BORING SUBJECT EVER, and I suggested that interested viewers should look on youtube for more of his satire, almost all of which is much more informative, and funny. I never suggested that anyone should take my opinions of this "satirical genius," as fucking GOSPEL! If you can't tell the difference between passion, and preaching, then what can I say? Oh I know what to say, "FUCK YOU."

Since no one seems inclined to take me up on the suggestion of going to youtube, and seeing what else he has to offer, let me post a few of his more interesting(yeah, Baby...that's an opinion too)  topics.

If EVEN BARUCH, who has apparently studied EVERY SUBJECT KNOWN TO MAN, can find a single one of these segments, that doesn't have AT LEAST SOME SMALL BIT OF INFORMATION, that he was formerly unaware of, I will be genuinely surprised...

And if you don't find any occasion TO LAUGH OUT LOUD, then you are DEAD INSIDE. And that statement is NOT an opinion, it is just a very sad FACT.

Here's another one, I just watched. For some reason, the video-resolution is sub-par, but it doesn't really matter...still laughed my ass off, while listening to his incisive analysis:

Here's another one(There are a SHITLOAD of them), that I just watched. One drug mentioned, Seroquil, I am familiar with. It has the most debilitating side-effects of any anti-psychotic medications I have ever taken(barely relevant...but still).

Yes, it is funny.  I watched the beginning of your second posted video, and it is very funny.  Come to think of it, it is supper time, I need to step out and get some chicken ;-))

OK, I thought it was only a meme, one I have used, where people refer to non-chicken meat as ... tastes like chicken.  What I didn't know is that there are people who actually believe that.  I have eaten alligator for instance, and no, it doesn't taste like chicken.  It does remind me of shark however.  I know people in these here parts, who have eaten rattle snake (we have an annual festival) ... and they tell me, no ... it doesn't taste like chicken.  Perhaps the people interviewed think that picante sauce comes from NYC too!  Also ... never, ever ... eat armadillo.   It is the only animal that can give you Biblical leprosy.  Raw pork would be more kosher.

Already subbed.  And he's usually in the top 10 trending, so I don't think word of mouth matters much at this point but every little bit helps.

It's hard to imagine Oliver not being funny or insightful.  My cousin maybe, but that's another story.

Oh SHIT! You guys literally have to watch this one, ALL THE WAY TO THE END! He actually makes  TELEVISION HISTORY, as in Guinness Book of World Records-level! Remember Oprah Winfrey's "Everybody gets a car?" No shit, this is actually DOUBLE that monetary impact, and far more beneficial...fuck me....JOHN OLIVER RULES!
