I lived in Butte, if by having a job for exactly 1 day and a room at the Salvation Army qualified as living there. But that was 1976 and Butte at the time was a dirty old mining town and the biggest industry there at the time was the corner bar and the Salvation Army.. and grubby worn down buildings..
Now Darby was a swinging place where there was 1 bar and the biggest day of the year was Loggers day when the town ho, Miss Logger 1976 rode through town on top of the biggest tree they could cut down on the back of a logging truck. She waved, people got really drunk and a good time was had by all. 

The 1970s was not Butte at it's best.  And at it's best, Butte sucked.  The core business district that was originally a cobbled together and thoughtless conglomeration of sleazy bars and whore houses still has a museum like appeal about it, a place to visit and meditate about the boom and bust that follows wherever mining goes and how that shapes a town.  I visited there at night in the late 80s.  I had the feeling many of the buildings were empty because the place felt like a ghost town with only two bars as the sole focus of busy activity.  Downtown, as unappealing as it is as a place of business activity, does help create an understanding of Butte's history which is all Butte has, a history similar to the history of the great depression, families struggling to survive with little hope of finding their way out of a hopeless life.

Butte has expanded since you were there, but it's just the usual mundane expansion along the interstate that includes modern stereotypes like the Holiday Inn, KMart, and MacDonald's, stereotypes that by their nature just don't fit in old downtown areas.  I spent a weekend there at a convention, all the while wondering why any organization would hold a convention in Butte.  The convention was not well attended, although I won't blame that on the fact that it was in Butte.  But it certainly was not helped by being in Butte, either.  Usually the convention brochure describes not only the panels of experts and the content of the smaller working groups, but some of the local attractions and areas of interest that will attract more attendees, but the main attraction in Butte is the Berkley Pit, the largest man made hole in the ground west of Iowa.  Wanting to see that such a thing might be identified and labeled as an abnormal perversion in some psychiatric circles.

The only reason I didn't keep the job there (as a cook) was somebody snitched that I was underage and a runaway from the job corp center in Darby. Me and my big mouth, eh? Of course that was all true at the time so instead of risk freezing to death in the Montana winter I drifted back to Darby.

Okay, I know I've done this once before(griping about the lack of replies), but for Christ's sake, you guys...
