Language (eventually) follows social choices.  As "they" is now becoming accepted as a singular pronoun specifying uncertain gender (as opposed to he or she), new pronouns like "hir" will become accepted.  I probably won't get used to it, but I'm old enough that it doesn't matter.  Another 20 years or so and I'll be out of everyone's hair.
