That's fair. I have a general phobia of getting in the sea

You are wiser than you think.  Beach sand is enough for me.  Don't know how surfers survive in the surf.

Meh, I love swimming in the ocean. Haven't surfed too much, but it was fun.

Twenty years in the USN. If I'd been afraid of water I'd have missed so much. Like swimming in Shark Channel and suddenly finding myself escorted by about thirty barracudas. Awesome.

I haven't swum in natural water since the day I got leeches between my toes and discovered a snapping turtle swimming next to me!

I only seen a snapping turtle once (river in N California).  I got out real quick when he noticed me and headed for my trunks!  Damn gay turtles!

Just any time I get into a large body of water where I can't see what's below me, I imagine some awful creepy-crawly thing ready to get me.
I'm the opposite.  I love murky ocean water and generally am not nervous about what's below the surface.  I recently went to the beach and was disappointed to spot only a few minnows, some gulls, and the occasional pelican.  The waters were calm and worryingly empty.

A few years ago, I tried to body surf a wave and I saw a dogfish (a very small shark) swim by.  I tried to stay out of its way but otherwise ignored it.  I think about them the same way I'd think about a deer or eagle or any other potential but unlikely animal threat: use some level of caution (don't try to grab it or anything) but don't live in fear of it, either.

Except for the occasional red tide, jellyfish convention, oil spill, rip current, poor water quality, hurricane, and/or lightning strike, the water's just fine.
