Well, you're not so new any more.  But welcome just the same.  I like the cut of your jib--so far. :))

Pink Floyd is rightfully the second greatest rock-band of all time, right after the Beatles, and just ahead of Led Zeppelin. The Who and the Rolling Stones round out the top 5. These facts are indisputable. All lower rankings are a matter of conjecture.

Personally, although I do like a few Steely Dan songs, I doubt they would make my top 40.

1)  Steely Dan
2)  Pink Floyd
3)  Eagles
4)  Doobie Bros
5)  ZZ Top(probably)

I'm sure there's somebody I'm not thinking of.  Other fav 70s bands would include, Sabbath, The Stones, CCR, ELP, Deep Purple, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Yes, Aerosmith, Chicago, EWF, James Taylor.

Honorable mention to Beatles for songwriting.  Ringo Star is just a very average drummer who got a break.  Not a huge fan of Zeppelin, though I like some of their songs.  Can't really stand the Who or the Doors(hate the Doors)

But since the 70s, as a musician, I've been deep into jazz and all it's variations, Latin, and Brasilian, and that's a whole nother universe.

Thanks.  And what is all this "cutting" and "jibbing"?

Ya know, I really have no idea what 'cutting and jibbing' is. :)  I think it means I like how you are traveling, talking or something like that.

How can a drummer not appreciate Led Zeppelin? John Bonham was the greatest of all time(not to be confused with the greatest living, which would be Neal Peart).

Bu I'm glad to see you mention YES, in your favorite rock bands. They are actually my all time "favorite" rock band, which is a different list, than the "greatest" bands that I listed(in fact I can't stand the Stones, but I have them as number 5, on greatest of all time). YES, who began in 1969, are finally being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, this year. Is there any other band, that makes music like YES?

LOL, at least you didnt say "Ringo is the greatest", like most people do.  Bonham, meh.  And no, Neal Peart is great, but I can think of a 100 drummers off the top of my head that exceed him.  Phil Collins, for one, I would put in that category.  Check out Phil in "Brand X, Moroccon Roll" from the 70s--unbelievable album.  Mike Portnoy, Dennis Chambers, Sonny Emory, Dave Weckl, Robbie Ameen, Carlos Vega, Horatio Hernandez, Simon Phillips, Lenny White, I could go on and on.  Steve Gadd is my all time fav all around drummer, though--Steely Dan, "Aja".

Good to see Yes still groovin'.  Forgot to mention ELP, another great group I saw live--Brain Salad Surgery.

Never thought Ringo was all that good--not that I have any basis to know, one way or the other.  Ordinary is guess is what I'd heard about him--and lucky.  My favorite is probably Sandy Nelson.  I love 'Let There Be Drums!".

I remember the name Sandy Nelson, can't quite place the style, swing jazz, right?  Drumming has gone conpletely of the charts these days w technique, but that doesn't always translate to good MUSIC.  Thats why Gadd is my fav, most musical drummer out there, thats why he got rich in the studio.

I am reaching into the misty past----but Sandy Nelson was considered one of the best and I think 'Let There Be Drums' was on the top of the charts back in the day.  I recall the name Buddy Rich, too, but I don't think he moved my needle much.  He was early 60's I think.  Drums and guitars--love it.  Also loved Duane Eddy--40 Miles of Bad Roads and Rebel Yell.  Ventures.

Buddy Rich, who I saw a few times, was the King of big band swing drumming, died in '87.  He innovated alot of hand technique.

Here's a superb drums/guitar demo you might enjoy:

Wow!  Don't think I ever saw a drum setup like that!  Good stuff.  I had not heard of Bozzio before--thanks.

Here's an amazing performance:  Chick Corea(keys), Dave Weckl(drums), Frank Gamballi(guitar, solo @ 8:05).  The entire piece is brilliant.

In the early 70's I was a stage hand at a casino at Lake Tahoe. There was a band on the main show who had a drummer who was the first drummer I ever heard who made music on the drums, I mean they sang not just kept the tempo. Can't for the life of me remember his name and the band was put together for the show. BTW the show was called Love In. Well, I could go on about the show for hours but not here.

Lots of Chicago music.

Any way
