Hey everybody, just joined up.I have been an atheist for a few years now.My family members are devout Christians and they flipped out when I told them.Though they are not forcing me to change in anyway I can strongly feel their disappointment.I love them a lot but really I am who I am.I just feel kind of disconnected sometimes so I thought about joining here.

We 'new atheists' have a reputation for being militant, but make no mistake  we didn't start this war. If you want to place blame put it on the the religious zealots who have been poisoning the minds of the  young for a long long time."

Same thing happened to me, except it was mostly my mother who was disappointed and arguably horrified.
Welcome friend.

Welcome friend.

What age were you when you spoke to your family about your atheism?  Just curious.

I waited for them to die, but I have also wondered if I wasn't able to even recognize my own atheism until the coast was clear.  I'm actually serious when I consider this.  It may have been that their deaths and my owning up to my atheism was a coincidence or simply that I was free to be myself.  Before atheism, I considered myself an agnostic, although I never announced that to family.  In hindsight, "agnostic" was a half truth, because I didn't really want to be called an atheist.  I've been an atheist for longer than when I first recognized that I was devoid a belief in a god and had been for many years.

Welcome.
