Romey had is 47%.  Now Trump will be forever known as 'Grab them by the pussy." Trump.  That would make a great T-shirt for the next two debates.  That would make a great bumper sticker! :))

People for Trump are like religious zealots. Randy Carson is probably one. They are in so far and so deep and so committed that even if they found out that Trump was a child porn advocate and a leader of the KKK they would still go with him to save themselves the embarrassment of being shown wrong.

We 'new atheists' have a reputation for being militant, but make no mistake  we didn't start this war. If you want to place blame put it on the the religious zealots who have been poisoning the minds of the  young for a long long time."

I was almost taken in by the first one, even after I read the article.  I was confused for a bit until...

Well if Hitlery zealots or anti-Trump zealots get their way, and Hitlery starts WW III soon next year ... then at least those folks won't be alive much longer (dark humor ... I want everyone to have a happy new year).

The Republican base is angry at being left behind in the world economy and rightly so.  That does not their current champion (Trump) the best leader, but their anger is legitimate.

Desperate people follow Banana Republic Leaders like Trump.

The solution is for a rational leader to rebuild the middle class.  Infrastructure jobs would be a good start.  My hope is that there is someone out there who will combine the "you didn't build it on your own" of Elizabeth Warren with the "we need to put people back to work" of some Union leader with an inspirational person like Obama or Biden thrown into the mix.

Clinton is a place-holder of general competency while we nurture and raise that person.

The "Take us back to the 1950s" crowd don't seem to be aware that Trump won't make that happen, and will probably make things worse. I can see a point where the moderate Republicans and Democrats are united against him.

I was born in 1950 and grew up in "the good old days".  I know what those were like.  Dads back from the War carrying "military discipline" with them and Moms making dinner every day.  Tha wasn't perfect either.

Today, we have to find a way for all adults to gain satisfaction in lives and careers, equality in marriages of all forms, and rational use of planetary resources to benefit everyone.  A rising tide DOES lift all boats.  The rising tide just has to be more equal.

1951 for me. I lived in a small town in Indiana, where the Sheriff returned a runaway kid to his parents because "you belong with your family". The kid was dead two weeks later, beat to death by the mother because he had demons in his heart. Good old days, indeed.

I trust that was sarcasm.  Which is fine; I admire good sarcasm.  If you meant it literally though, that's scary!

I meant it literally. Further investigation showed that she had been married before, but that husband and three children couldn't be found.

Gawdzilla and Cavebear I'm from '45, and I saw what each of you describe.  My dad was a Dept. of the Army civilian and so we lived in or near military housing.  I grew up with my mom at home and dad worked.  But mom was not the typical stay-at-home, for she had a feminist streak in her before that was even a word.  But I pretty much grew up traditional in that area.  But I was aware of kids being beaten along with dogs, because a man's home was his castle and he could do whatever the hell he wanted.  But wife beating, child beating and animal abuse was not talked about.  And sense I lived in Alabama for 5 years, (in the area of those wonderful signs 'colored' and 'white' plastered everywhere) racism was not talked about either.  But all those topics are now openly talked about; there isn't more of any of it, just much more noticed and talked about today, than then.  That's a good thing.

As for Trump and the anger of his followers, I think is sort of related to the above.  A patriarchal man is no longer assumed to be in charge and no longer assumed to be able to do what he wants.  Traditionally, he could and did rule his castle.  Most of Trumps followers seem to be white.  And things are a-changing for them, too.  Change brings disorientation and anger.  Plus, the have's have been getting more and more and demanding more and more.  The middle class is being depleted and squeezed.  That causes anger.  So, Trump has learned to tap into that anger; the anger the Repubs have been flaming since Reagan.  They have masterfully used sound bytes, fear and artful lies to keep their base riled up.  They grew Trump--and now they have to live with it.  I see him destroying the traditional Rep. party, since he does not give a shit about it.  He simply believes in and works for Trumpism.  I don't think he is even running for Pres right now.  I think he is running to use his base to form a Media outlet that is anti-Hillary.  That will make him money and keep him in the spotlight.  Trumpism is what he wants, and as many followers as he can get, for that spells money for him.

We had Populism under Huey Long back in the 1930s ... but that was before my time.
