QuoteThe AFA found the ad in a copy of Travel + Leisure magazine, and quickly put out a statement on their website to reprimand the company.

“Hilton Worldwide shocked readers by placing a full-page ad that featured two men in bed together,” the post reads. “If Hilton had advertised two men playing tennis, cards or having lunch, that would have been reasonable.”

“Travel and Leisure isn’t a gay-specific magazine sent directly to homosexual’s [sic] homes,” the AFA added. “It’s a widely distributed mainstream publication that can be found in many public places such as doctors’ or auto repair waiting rooms.”

A Hilton spokesperson responded to the complaints by defending the advertisement.

“Hilton Worldwide is a global company of diverse cultures serving diverse guests,” the spokesperson said. “We are proud to depict and reflect our guest diversity in our advertising.”

The AFA has demanded to have a meeting with Hilton representatives to insist that ads are more “family-friendly” from now on.

So basically a Christian advocacy group thinks they can dictate to an international hotel chain? And they can determine what is reasonable to advertise?

I Think they are going to get a wake up call on this one.

I agree with the AFA.  It should be more family-friendly.

They should have a kid, too.

It is understandable they are upset. Ads like this make gay relationship seem acceptable and reduce stigma. Adults and children might see this and think two men in bed together is as normal as a man and woman in bed together. The AFA doesn't want that. They want gay relationships stigmatized. Good for Hilton.

Yes and we need to see more of it. Marriott, which is owned by a powerful Mormon family, allows porn in their hotel rooms. They aren't stupid. Somebody complained about that to the church and got shut down big time. You don't want to rile one of your biggest tithe payers.

Jack89

They're not dictating anything, they're complaining.  I don't particularly care for the add either, but that doesn't mean I think it should be banned.

Ah, the Christian right just doesn't understand that the genie is out of the bottle and he and his husband are not going back in.

I remember the backlash against Oreos when they had the rainbow cookie filling.  So many people were pissed off.  I no longer buy the occasional package of Oreos.  I now buy 2.  And the same with Honey Maid graham crackers.  I go out of my way to make sure we always have some around.  The point is, if it weren't for the bitching about it, I likely would never have heard about it.  Now guess where I and many like me will be staying the next time we need a hotel.  Thank you, Christian right, for always letting me know which companies I should be patronizing.

These people with their righteous mindset imagine an audience of people who will be morally upset and effectively rally to the cause. None of them actually look at the demographics and see the shift from religious to secularism that is taking place. They are caught up in their own delusion.

widdershins

I think it's actually more than that, though their delusion is certainly the basic problem.  The believe they have been wronged when they see something they find personally offensive.  I read an article just last week with some religious guy bitching about how evangelicals are being treated so unfairly today.  One of the examples given was that gay people can get married now.  Somehow other people being able to do things they don't like is persecution.  Seeing it is persecution.  Talking about it is persecution.  Being made to think about it is persecution.

You really have to understand the fucked up mindset these people are in to even begin to fathom what's going on in their fucked-up little heads.  These are people who believe that they are being persecuted if they can't display their religious symbols on public property.  They are also being persecuted if any other religion's symbols are portrayed publicly.  To not read specifically the Bible in school, persecution.  To read the Quran in schools, persecution.  Their minds are too twisted by their idiotic beliefs to be able to tell the difference between "what I want" and "what is just".  I've heard it said that by not teaching about God, specifically, in schools amounts to teaching atheism.  These people believe that there is always a "default" position, and that position is never inconvenient.  Atheism couldn't be the default position, for instance, because that would be inconvenient.  Except, of course, when it comes to teaching religion in schools.  Then, yes, atheism is the default position because at that point it becomes convenient.

I think the infusion of these mislead jackasses is what actually drove the Republican party nuts to the point where they truly believe that things are "fair" only when and never when they are not getting their way.  I think they actually believe that suppressing minority votes to sway the election in their favor is "fair", likely because these "takers" don't deserve a voice in government anyway, not because they are minority or poor, but because the government gives mansions and steaks and lobster to minorities and the poor, who are just too lazy to do anything but stand there with their hands out waiting for all the sweet, sweet government handouts we keep hearing so much about.  To hear them talk they actually believe that they would be so much better off quitting their jobs and just living off the government.  I have actually heard this dumb fucking claim, though I've never actually seen anyone except liberals with the balls to fucking try it, and never for more than a month.

At any rate, I think it's more than just imagining an audience who will rally to their cause.  I think these dipshits actually believe they have been wronged and are legitimately shocked when nobody else agrees with them.

HAHAHHA How did I miss this thread. This is precious! Let them rally all they want trying to dictate media commercials; profit. Pffft That shit doesn't pull that easy in the US. This will only get bigger and it will become the norm eventually, hopefully esp. if democrats take the elections. Fingers crossed.

The astonishing thing is not that they actually believe that they were wronged for any reason, but think that beliefs are not dictated by politics, benefit amd profit.

Somebody tell these idiots that things have already tipped, and if they continue to go a certain way, just after a few generations anyone who is offended by this kind of stuff loudly will be socially regarded as fanatics and extremists in American societies, religious or not.

The threshold is getting closer and closer society gains from LGBT eqaulity laws and modificatoin of responses every day. And their ass is on fire. BWUUHAHHAAA

Ah the U.S., where you have mothers with 12 kids ranting in Target over LGBT issues while shaking a bible in the air. Any time we start looking like we are up to speed and intelligent, we can fix that quick. Used to listen to James Dobson on the radio with his trembling voice breaking with emotion at how society was collapsing around us. Now I'm cheering the demise of "religious values". Every old white guy that dies is a step forward. This from an old white guy.

To give the AFA a brain hernia, you first have to send them a brain to herniate.

I don't particularly care for the ad (too hairy), but to complain about it in the terms they did is showing that it came from something other than a brain.

I'm glad I don't work in advertising. I'd respond with an ad showing 3 men in bed. Every time they complained I'd add another man.

Maybe they'll meet with Hilton reps and strike a compromise. Hilton can continue to show gay couples but only in gay magazines, and they must show a more "accurate" depiction of a gay couples. You know, Satanic symbols painted on the walls in the blood of innocent children and oversized dildos swinging from the ceiling fans, since we all know this is what all gay people are like behind closed doors. </sarcasm>
How can you be sure my refusal to agree with your claim a symptom of my ignorance and not yours?

In my youth in the US, all movies and TV were censored ... and by a miracle, all the members of the censorship board where good Roman Catholics.  That horse left the barn already.  Today all SCOTUS members are either Roman Catholic or Jewish.
