I know that a great many people have a visceral hatred for the police. This is unfair.

Unfortunately, this is what happens in a society like ours, which is emotion based and media driven.

Few people will stop to remind themselves that the police are about the only thing standing between them and utter anarchy and that they'd live the life of "Gangs of New York" were the police not there to protect them - that is, being the victims of the biggest, meanest bullies, having to take whatever crap the bullies felt like dishing out. It wouldn't just be the most recent illegal aliens who lived under the thumbs of slave-drivers and cut-throats in sweatshops; it would be everybody - as it was in the US before the establishment of the police forces.

Most of the police are, in fact, honest and decent and dedicated to their jobs. The media would have us believe otherwise. It's easy to believe otherwise when the only reports we get are of unarmed citizens being shot by the police. We hardly ever hear of cops being shot by ambush - this happens - or of the good things that cops do every day of every week: the crimes they stop, the crimes they prevent, the lives they save, the charity that they give.

So - before you call for the crucifixion of all cops - realize that most cops don't deserve it.
