This statement is from a TV appearance by Erdogan - "there is this trouble called twitter now, social media, in my opinion, is the biggest trouble for all societies."

Desperate stuff. He is also railing against peaceful gatherings. True colours showing.

QuoteRiot police started using Agent Orange (orange gas in shells)
I am not sure how true is that.
It doesn't sound true.  Agent Orange isn't orange gas.  It's a solid, and the name comes from the orange barrels it was shipped in.  As a means of dispersing a crowd, it's less effective than talcum powder (which will cause you to choke until you cough it out) or water (which can hurt badly - even break bones - if the pressure is high enough).  Even smoke from wood or paper fires would work better.  The effect of Agent Orange is long-term - cancer and deformed offspring.

I suspect they're using orange-colored smoke.

In any event, stay safe, and lets hope that the police don't kill anyone.

Yeah... I don't see it being Agent Orange either. I don't know of any riot procedures that include the use of defoliants (plant killer).

As far as I can tell from several of the pictures, their riot procedures are a bit flawed any way. This will increase the likelihood of injury on both sides.

I liked the picture of the guy reading to the riot policeman. Great stuff.

Stay safe.

It used to be that you could keep the press out of your country, and kill all the dissidents you wanted to.  Now "the press" is everyone with a cellphone, and you can't keep anything private.  Big trouble for "societies" (if those societies are limited to the government).

When will be yall's next election? Will it be soon enough that people will still be pissed off over this or will they have enough time to brush this under the rug and get re-elected next cycle?

Note: That is assuming Turks have as short of political memory as Americans, which I somewhat doubt.

Now Erdogan Wants To Build A Mosque In Taksim Square
Quote"There is now a menace which is called Twitter," Erdogan said. "The best examples of lies can be found there. To me, social media is the worst menace to society."

Quote from: "drunkenshoe"It's a miracle nobody is dead yet, but there are rumours all the time so I cannot say anything for sure. Apparently 1700 people are held.
I don't like to be the bearer of bad news, but there have been casualties.  There's 3 dead as of 6/3.  One who got hit by a taxi and one was shot and another was killed accidentally, allegedly.

Yes. That is a good method to estinguish CS grenades. Getting hit by a 40mm CS round could hurt though. Those guys were standing right in the line of fire.

Also, the police were employing them downwind... If they were trying to deny the area on the other side, then perhaps it's not that odd. But really, I didn't see any crowd activity that warrented the employment of CS. As they use it, and the crowd becomes used to it and comes up with counters, CS would be less effective when it truely is needed.

An individual at the protests recently posted, "Turkish police is right now taking people from their homes due to "tweets they wrote" regarding #occupygezi "

Civil disobedience is sexy.

Updated report: At least 24 people were arrested in the coastal city of Izmir for encouraging rebellion over social media and tweeting "misleading and libellous information", according to the state-run Anatolia news agency.
