Title: Bannockburn, The Battle Of
Post by: stromboli on February 02, 2016, 03:39:50 PM
The battle of Bannockburn is at the end of "Braveheart" and not the battle of Stirling Bridge that Wallace fought, which was misrepresented by the movie. The battle was fought at a bridge on the River Forth. Wallace chose that ground because it was marshy and the British forces could only cross the bridge two abreast. Wallace allowed only as many British as he thought he could defeat to cross, and then attacked downhill on the massed force, which could not effectively retreat and were cut off from reinforcements. The battle as portrayed by Mel Gibson is his interpretation, but in my view not accurate..

Robert Bruce is portrayed in the movie Braveheart as a somewhat wishy washy, undecided potential heir to the throne of Scotland, but the real picture was much more complicated. There were other pretenders besides him and some very complicated relationships between Scotland and England.

This is a good video because it shows the events leading up to the battle and the players involved. And it is done to be as historically accurate as possible, given the limited histories written at the time. Enjoy.
