Title: HOLY SMOKE!!

You can watch a live feed of a chimney in Rome:

When I first looked it was called "waiting for holy smoke". Made me chuckle. Now it is called "awaiting the Cardinals decision"..... Not nearly as effective I think.

I like to think CNN will not fire someone because of something like that.....

It is almost St. Patrick's Day, so Jamesons is the appropriate drink. I might have to make mine car bombs, though. You're on.

No. You're right.   **Holy Smoke** is much funnier.

As the American unit weighs in towards a more liberal, make-fun-at-yourself catholic agenda for the new era.
Which I'm all for as long as the new American-Liberal Catholic agenda includes legally processing child abusers and observing some sort of faction which disallows future child abuse.

just sayin...............

Probably a couple years ago now, some of the west coasters had a meet up or two. I met a bunch of the Philly area folks years ago in the IG.com days when Dawkins was in town to do a reading and Q & A for The God Delusion, and then did an interview with the RRS. I was the camera man for the interview.

Meet ups really should happen more often than they do.

SO THE FUCK WHAT!

I can also watch a child in a preschool playroom pretend to have a tea party with invisible friends. When adults pretend it is insulting. Otherwise just because I fancy a blowjob from Angelina Jolie must mean I will get one because the idea sounds nice.

As a former Catholic it does not matter how "pretty" the superstition is, you are not dealing with reality here. You are dealing with adults in a delusional case of "lets pretend". The ancient Egyptians were full of adults too, but that did not make the sun a god.

Meanwhile while global media panders to superstition, tens of thousands of kids die from starvation or disease in Africa. And crime and war and death still exist as they always have. But somehow, magically, staring at a fucking pipe will bring peace to the world when it is obvious the track record of this tradition has failed to deliver.

Because as irrelevant as it is in terms of spirituality and the afterlife, the Roman Catholic Church is the single largest denomination of Christianity and probably the largest single religious group in the world.  Without any reference to anything supernatural it is still a large and powerful organization in purely earthly terms.

Therefore the leader of the Church is of interest simply for political reasons.

Similar to how people outside the US are impacted by the election of the US president.

Yeah.  Apparently, he wasn't even on the top 15 most likely to be elected list. That was the one thing the NPR correspondent knew about him, and at the time, I wondered why she had not collected more information on him if she knew he was the runner up at the last conclave.  She must have spent her time brushing up on the top 15.  Or maybe she didn't brush up at all.  And what expert or talking head decides who the top 15 are anyway?  Owing to the closely guarded secrecy of the process, who would know anything beforehand?

With several days of media hype, which extended even to NPR (it's the only time I can remember NPR hyping anything so out of proportion beforehand), there seemed to be this breathless wonderment that pervaded the whole thing.  What came across was not so much who the Pope was, but that white smoke came out the chimney and... wonder of wonders... we have a Pope!  WTF?  Did they think maybe we wouldn't have a Pope?

But the excitement over the last week was bizarre to an extreme.  They treated the event like a second coming of Christ, which would also be silly, of course.  But so much palaver over a pointless event like appointing a new head of a cult that worships an imaginary god, and everyone goes nuts.  It's really weird when an NPR correspondent is speechless and breathless.

They interviewed people in St. Peter's Square, hand picked I supposed for their enthusiasm, and I thought it would be fun to be there and be asked by a correspondent why I traveled to Rome for this event.  I could say, "I always wanted to spend a huge sum of money to do one utterly pointless thing in my life, and I thought there would never be a better chance than this.   Cross one off my bucket list!"

The old Pope done gone up in smoke
It's black, its black its white!!!!
And all the them stupid cat-o-licks
stood in the rain all night

with bated breath awaitin'
which old homophobe will come
to spew the same old rhetoric
from beneath St. Peter's dome.

to be the exalted leader
of a billion blank empty minds
while happily taking their money
and humping their kids behinds

But don't worry, more dirt will follow
so allay your worries and fears
they been sweeping it under the rug
for 700 years.

You can act all benign and shit
but don't you fear, my friend
the dirt is just too deep
It'll leak out in the end.

You would think so, but the burning of the votes symbolizes the holy secrecy of the event.  Of course that's not going to stop some disgruntled cardinal from blabbing it to someone.  In the end, I suspect making a big deal out of the secrecy, real or imagined, just adds more to the hype.  Oh my, a new Pope has emerged.  He must be sooo holy, because the whole process is sooo magically secret; Whoo hoo!  And they notify everyone with a smoke signal, just like man did in ancient times.  A text message, tweet, or a public announcement is just so banal.  An event like this requires fire and smoke.

That seagull on the chimney in Rome came back to my thoughts today. A friend and I made a little trip across the border to Germany and we were confronted with a whole flock of Catholic birds. Crows, that seemed to have developed a certain preference for the roof of a big RC church in Rhede, Germany. It reminded me of Hitchcock's movie "the birds". Reality trumps what can be communicated in a video.....

Thanks! I also just found out that the usable code is accessible through the "sharing" link under the video on youtube. I always just included the URL. It worked on Facebook, but not here....
