Drawings, paintings, digital or oldfashioned. Here's a place to share it.
Drawing used to be a big part of my life, and because I have a 10.1 inch android-tablet and a bamboo-one drawingtablet for my PC, I decided to buy Sketchbook Pro for both platforms. The android version costs but a tenth of the PC version, but will take more getting used to. It's brilliant for making abstract pieces, even if you've never drawn before. Just combine drawing aids with different special-effects brushes and throw in some mirroring if you want.
I love the flexibility of manipulating seperate layers. Pencil, pen and ink were so messy. And rotationg the canvas (PC version) is great during inking. And you end zooming in and out A LOT.
To get aquainted with the tools I'll likely use the most I watched this tutorial (PC version)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZDUWspKT ... NmgbMNijMR (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZDUWspKTvt0&list=PLCqoYkvllQgO8kCHNBwQd_MNmgbMNijMR)
and got cracking
-I downloaded a spiderman-sketch, and lowered the opacity to a lighter gray.
-Started a layer on top of that, to do a rough tentative inking job. With digital art you do the inking with a 6B pencil instead of ink. If you've ever done real inking, that might make you giggle.
-Replaced the sketch with a green background (a contrasting colour to make it easier to spot later colouring errors)
-Placed a layer in between the background and the inked Spidey. Because of this I could do a sloppy job filling in the blue, cleaning things up with the hard eraser afterwards.
-A seperate layer on top of that (still underneath the inked Spidey) for the red.
-Locking the transparancy on the two middle layers (the foreground colouring) allows me to apply shading to Spidey, without being able to mess up and colour outside Spidey's body.
-Made the background light blue, and airbrushed in some whites and greys to suggest clouds.
-Using the same "lock transparancy" trick I can also make the ink-work look fancier, and plan on improving the background (maybe something with skyscrapers to test out the digital rulers).
Here's two cartoons I did a while ago using Artrage2
[spoil:3gcvung1](//http://i640.photobucket.com/albums/uu129/jutter2/myass.jpg)
I expect to do better with my new software. Stay tuned.
This was a really quick exercise (matter of minutes). No borrowed sketch this time. This one done with the android-version on my tablet, and that means fingerpainting. With the zoom function that's still remarkably flexible.
The dog started out as a bland brown sillouette . Again using the "lock transparancy" trick on that layer I added shading (airbrush) and highlights (pencil). On a second layer I drew in the collar, eyes and nose with pencil. Finally I added a background layer, airbrushed in a grey shadow, and picked out a special brush for the colourfull backdrop.
I draw on paper - with a pencil. (then I ink it later)
Soooo old. I'm so old. :rollin:

How do you make brush&ink, let alone pen&ink look that grainy? I lack the skills for achieving such effects the oldfashioned way.
With my cartoony background, I always end up messing up the proportions on realistic attempts.

It's called ink by hand - with a nib. Pointillism or harsh marks........... You slowly build the darker areas by applying more ink where needed. Takes a lot of time but the end result is pretty cool. Ink actually etches into paper based on line and amount.
Also, you *can* paint with ink - make a wash from ink and water. You layer the same way.
here's ink wash - line work and paint-brushed ink
(//http://i1104.photobucket.com/albums/h321/SabrinaTheInkWitch/c89abeb9.jpg)
(When I do children's books - I use wash and colored inks)
99% of what I do is black&white using India ink.
about 50% of my work is drawing tattoos for people prior to them seeing a skin artist. I have two tattoos to finish today.
Here's one I did awhile back
(//http://i1104.photobucket.com/albums/h321/SabrinaTheInkWitch/3443836a.jpg)
I began pen&Ink in 1975
Frackloads of tiny dots... I should've guessed. Beautiful results though.
Quote from: "WitchSabrina"Also, you *can* paint with ink - make a wash from ink and water. You layer the same way.
I've done charcoal drawings, where shading was also a matter of stacking light layers of decreasing size (while squinting a bit less at my example for every next layer).
Also I used to do greetingcard desings (even sold some to Hallmark) where coloured inks were my weapon of choice. -tricks I learned from another greetingcard-designer- After applying masking film (smelly icky rubbery shit) to the foreground, and moistening the tightly taped down sheet of paper, it's colourfull splashy time, blending parts out with a clean dry brush. After that....
...I'm going to miss part of it, but not the waiting for things to finally dry up, having to start from scratch if things go too far astray, or paying through the nose for materials that might go bad before I ever get around to using them. Welcome digital age.
For those who'd like to take a crack at oldfashioned 40's/50's cartooning style. A google image search for Preston Blair should be helpfull.
Here's how to do a cute character.
Blair's work was once recommended to me by Wilbert Plijnaar (//http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1156135/). (That and Sid Fields books on screenplaywriting). This was roughly a year before he got scooped up by Hollywood.
Back in college I majored in commercial art..did a lot of cartooning, etc.. My dad was an ad exec then sold for Flourographics, artist separated color pre computers.. everything was done by hand with the base line drawing then layered primary colors of mylar, transparency..
I can still hear my dad when he was a dept store ad exec saying, 'Dammit Marty, we don't sell tits and pussy..' I liked drawing naked chicks..
For those who want to feel that joy also; check out these Preston Blair tutorials. Just leave out the clothes...

If you have an Android or Apple I-device (smartphone/tablet)... invest a few bucks into Sketchbook Pro, fool around with the tools and brushes, and share your (abstract) doodles. At well under a tenner this is a really powerfull and easy to use art-kit.

Dammit.. I was studying anatomy books..no wonder all the girls I drew looked like they'd been cut apart.
I'm currently also experimenting with doing Alexander/Ross-style landscape painting digitally. Once I get the hang of happy clouds and happy mountains, it's on to happy trees, bushes etc. I noticed the android version of Sketchbook Pro includes one smearing tool... which comes in real handy here.
Also got my hands on the android version of Photoshop. I love how all these uber-powerfull tools are available at well under ten euro. Lot's of manga-style tutorials for Android also. A great opportunity to learn that style.
Here is a somewhat older drawing I did. (//https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-SWo7j4CUPKs/Tj4F-0xAFGI/AAAAAAAAAHg/4JMDbMnhboE/w319-h480-no/SAYJr%25243BArchitecturalMemory5-11001.jpeg)

:-D Thank you! I'm glad you like it. The ones I show are ones that never sold. I wish I had kept some of them. I had pictures of all of them but they got lost when a virus took them out on my computer, as well as destroying the hard drive. This was way back when there weren't the safe guards we have now. At least I didn't. I'll try and get my some to take pictures of more pieces I have. One is a surreal I did that is the only one I have done. Another is one of my puppies from memory done in, if you are a normal artist, in opaque water colors---And if you are an illustrator designer colors----or if you are a snobbish artist, gouache. Solitary

This is an oil painting on linen. What is different is the mat is trompe L'oell painted on the linen and not a real mat. The circles on the Indian show that he did the sun ceremony which means he hung from skewers facing the sun until they tore through his chest. The White Buffalo was sacred to the Plains Indians and was called Tatanka.

Quote from: "PickelledEggs"These are amazing, Solitary! :-D
Thank you so much! :-D I'm glad you liked them. I'm not satisfied with two of them and I want to change them if I can. The one with the prong horned antelopes needs a stormy sky behind it to set off the antelopes better. Sometimes I get lazy after painting a detailed painting. The sky should be like the one with the buffalo in it. I might be able to change it because my shaking wouldn't be so critical to do that and it bugs me that I didn't do it originally. My best work was done at art school but they kept everything. I consider myself more an illustrator than a fine artist.
But I just hate commercial art that burns you out. I was doing 64 paintings a day in dyes doing graphic art with no benefits to make ends meet. I had a terrific boss, but I got bored to death. He asked me to design a new series of paintings, and he asked me to show the other artist how I did them because they could not copy them. That was the most fun I ever had working in any job because it was being creative and original. Unfortunately you can't make money in commercial art unless you sell your soul, and fine art is so hit and miss you need two jobs. I think artist are the most exploited of all jobs you can have. Solitary
That is some beautiful work, Witch Sabrina!

Solitary! What gifted work! So very sorry to hear you cant' paint anymore. It's a similar fate that came to Ralph McQuarrie, the painter who designed all the Star Wars look for the original three movies. He has Parkinson's, and can no longer paint.
I especially like the surrealist astronauts (And I do see the naked girl).

And I like your pencil drawings that seem to be a lost art. If a person can't draw and make it look like they want, how can they possibly do it from their imagination or paint a picture? Have you tried doing your drawings with different hardness's of pencils? Another good practice is using hard charcoal and making it as light as you can make it and work up to darkness where it needs it.
If you like surrealism check out Dali's paintings below. A man I worked for was better than him in my opinion. When I first went to his house he had a very intricate drawing of a philodendron plant. When I came back when he was done it was a bunch of faces in pointillism for leaves and intertwining geometric designs and shapes. Solitary

I agree! He's the only artist that has done completely original art in my lifetime. A lot of his paintings are done with an air brush. I wonder what kind of night mares he and Dali had?
Well maybe not as original as I thought. Like Picasso said: "Good artist have talent, and great artist copy."
They both seemed to be obsessed with sex and death.

Here are some sketches: http://postimg.org/gallery/bwt10ofu/
Well done! Keep drawing and you will find after that you will start to have a photographic memory. All the arts require practice, practice, practice, and more practice. And what is fun is to look at your earlier work and compare the difference. Even if I didn't draw or paint for periods of time I got better just thinking about it. And don't listen to critics because they are usually not artists at all and don't realize it's not like taking a photograph. Solitary
Awesome, Zorn!
I love Giger. The comic hero drawings are amazing as well!
Thanks, guys. The superhero drawings were for an idea I had for a comic book called "New Mutants 2099". The green guy is supposed to be a descendant of Bruce Banner, called "Gamma". The comic book cover was done in pencil in 1992 and then scanned and colored on a computer back in 1996. I did the sketches 20 years ago, at work, when I was on break...mostly. I had a much better grasp of the human figure then than I do now. I couldn't do one very well out-of-my-head anymore. My skills at best have stagnated, and in areas have seriously atrophied over time. I stopped collecting comics, and lost interest in drawing them as well, and began building sci-fi models again (I built them all through my childhood) as a creative outlet. I have built 44 models already this year! 8-)
Just did a charcoal study. Finished it around 1 this morning.
Quote from: "PickelledEggs"Just did a charcoal study. Finished it around 1 this morning.
Pretty damn good. I think the eyes may be a
little misaligned to each other, but even so it's 50x better than anything I could make! =D>
Well done pickelledEggs! The eyes look OK to me. Maybe that's why my portraits always had slanted eyes even when they weren't Orientals. I hope my son's Chinese girl friend doesn't read this. :-$ 8-[ Keep those cards and letters coming! :P  Solitary
Shit. You're right. They are a tiny bit off. It might be the eye socket on her right eye, because it goes too low.
Either way. Thanks for the compliments AND constructive criticism! :-D
I think it's awesome! I thought it was just a trick of the shadows, but now that you point out the eye socket, I see it. But until you pointed it out I didn't notice it. Excellent work.
A lot of people do not have features that are picture perfect, and one reason why portraits are so hard to get a likeness. Caricature artist exaggerate this fact when they do a portrait. The drawing may be spot on if it is a good likeness. Even if not it is excellent work. =D> Solitary
Thanks, guys! :-D :-D
Hey guys, I did a new progress video with the last day study I finished.[youtube:3n42an8d]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3E1EECrj_mI[/youtube:3n42an8d]
Let me know what you think! Be as critical as possible, btw. If something sucks and you think can be done better, let me know your suggestions!
(solitary had a good tip with the last one telling my head was in the way)
=D> Good job! Even when I was able I'm not sure I could do better. I did this type of work when I was going to art school. Faces and the human body are the hardest to draw because if anything is off it stands out like a sore thumb. And yet in order to get a likeness you have to be able to draw what is off on the face and be able to account for it without making a character study. If you can do this good with faces you can draw anything. Another thing that is hard to draw is automobiles, also anything that is foreshorten, like a hand, face, or body. It's nice to see that computer art hasn't stopped people from drawing. If one can't draw he doesn't have the foundation needed for painting. Try transparent water collars first if you want to. Solitary
Thanks, Solitary!
I found a drawing I did about 20 years ago. I was probably 3 or 4 at the time. Figured I'd share. :rollin:

If you have linux, there is a TON of good free software you can use.
GIMP is a good alternative to Photoshop. (I actually like it a little better) Inkscape is an Adobe Illustrator clone, Blender is 3d modeling software. I'm sure there are more too.
If you go to this website, you can download and burn Ubuntu Studio to a cd and try it. It's preloaded with all the creative software... graphics, audio, video... etc

I'm assuming, but I have a feeling that the name "zentangle" came way after people started doing them. I've actually know a few people that have never even seen a zentangle , but they sort of ... just started doing them. Almost like it's instinctive.

Yes, Pickles is very talented. You and I both agree with that. But I disagree that yours is not talented. Most importantly, it must be satisfying on a fairly important level. Then simply do it for that reason. And put it on better paper--art paper, for that is what it is. Art! And without a doubt! I really like both of your art and Pickles art. They are different. But that is even better. Do not belittle your talent--enjoy it, practice it and it will grow. And do not tell me that the crap that Picasso put out was better than either of yours!

It is very common for people to be their own worst critic. It is also very common for people with a some level of aptitude for a particular thing to focus too much on what they're not able to do and therefore allow that to stop them from doing what they are able to do. I see it in artists all the time.
If I had a dime for every musician I've known who stopped writing original material because 'Paul Simon/James Taylor/Bruce Springsteen/you get the idea is so good and I'll never be able to write that well so why bother?' What they fail to see is that 1. even Paul Simon couldn't write like Paul Simon when he only had a few dozen songs under his belt and 2. There are lots of very talented and very valid artists out there who will never be able to do what Paul Simon does yet they still do what they do and the world is a better place for it.
Don't let what you can't do stand in the way of what you can do.

And shir, I second what Johan says to a "T".
Don't beat yourself up too hard about artwork. When you're evaluating your own work, you should ALWAYS see room for improvement and look for ways to improve the next go-around, but in terms of any piece you just completed, you need to go down this check list:
-Did I do what I aimed to?
-Did I do it to the best of my ability this time?
There you go. A checklist of only 2 things you need to worry about. Always look for things you can improve in your work, but never piss on yourself about it... unless you slack on somethings, like I have done in the past. There have been a few things that I half-assed and I felt pretty bad about half-assing... But other than that. Never regret anything lol

I guess I do enjoy doing them, but the problem is the tend to come from, especially the pieces I have worked on the last couple of days, a very painful place inside me that I have to find some outlet to release... to the point I don't even necessarily enjoy doing them, they are something I have to do to try to keep my sanity.
That one was done with both feelings... both love and hurt. Love in that it was a visualization of my memory of holding her hand, of the side of her body as we laid next to each other (hence why it's only the side and not her full body or face)... but hurt in that it was done on the last day I think I will ever see her. And that's why I (poorly) tried to kinda convey they are walking separate directions, but I didn't do as good of job of that as I really wanted.
My main hope is that I can someday find someone and something that makes me happy enough to do art simply as a way to express predominately just positive emotions that I am not able to really say in words because my brain won't allow me. That drawing was my way of trying to say how beautiful I found lying next to her and getting to share life, if even briefly. That's what I want the majority of my art to reflect.

Story of my life, right there. Most of my work was spawned from a moment of pure stress/frustration/depression. Not all, but most. Art is expression. You're doing it right. Keep doing it and you'll get better at communicating your expression in the voice that you like best.

Is there a mirror in your house? Because looking for what you're looking for anywhere else is anything but healthy.

I am not an artist. But I've known a couple. Your description above is the 'text book' wording for why an artist is an artist. You see your work with different eyes than anybody else can. Why? Because you see the piece as a imperfect rendition of the picture you have of it in your brain. You compare the piece in the real world with the perfect piece in your head that none can see but you. I see the piece and think it wonderful--emotive, suggestive, and visually stimulating. I think striving for that perfection done with your hands is what keeps you wanting (having to) do art. I wonder how you would react if you ever reached that goal??
Don't destroy any of your work--not until a third party has seen it. And don't stop because you think you are inferior than other artists. Keep it up--I may be a poor judge, but I like your work.
I've worked out emotions in many artistic ways. I move on from those emotions, perhaps because of the art, but I also move on from the art. I want my art to speak for humanity's fondest wishes, but it often speaks of my personal struggles.

(Very) Rough draft of an Elephant I am going to do for a coworker who likes elephants. Trying to incorporate more Indian motifs into this one than my normal. Might also look at some Thai wats and art, see if anything useful there.

So I finished my 3rd art project with a drawing/painting on the required theme of Social Responsibility with the subject of the Dakota Pipeline and I thought it was good for a beginner. Critiques?

If you put me in jail, with equipment, to get out when I completed a corner of that, I couldn't.
Stupa 1 - Very abstractly, it became a stupa rising out of the jungle covered in prayer flags, with plant overgrowth on it, with a holy mountain peeking out of the clouds on the left and a flower-like sun overlooking it all. All together, spent about 8 hours drawing it, but that was at work so realistically closer to 4, on 8 1/2 by 14 paper.
Spoiling Day 1 & 2 just to keep things tidy.
Day 1
Short day, just a small flower that was experimenting on trying to do something the super douchy tribal tattoo patterns that doesn't look horrible. They make up the vine-like bit.
Day 2
Majority of work was done here; did the mandalas on the bottom left and right, and the stupa dome. Really, really wanted to throw it away at this point because I just did not like the way it was coming out, but coworkers insisted it looked good so I kept working on. Designs at top of stupa suppose to be kinda evocative of Byzantine artwork with the golden halos behind people's heads.
Day 3 - A few more mandala like side-bits to the stupa, the entire flower-like sun, and then after work about an hour on the sky inbetween the two.

Will be framing it and giving it to one of my coworkers, making it the first piece I have given to someone else, hence the main reason I am sharing it here.

I like the glasses, nose, and mouth. Well, done.
Yeah, he's a great artist and a great friend
I took a couple of art classes in college. I wasn't very good, but we had to do a charcoal of a living model. She didn't take her clothes off. It was a 101 level class. But I did get her shape right and her position, and I was even thinking I had done a particularly good job, although I could never draw a face, except for maybe the smiley face icon. So I just drew the shape of her head, and left the face blank. But it still looked OK to me, like the face was left blank for artistic effect, rather than as evidence of incompetence. It was done on one of those large size pads like the ones in PickelledEggs' photos. When I turned in, I managed to tear off a corner, but the drawing was still intact.
Later, the art department had a student art show, and I was surprised to see my charcoal on display. It was just stapled to a huge display board in amongst a bunch of other paintings, sculptures, etc of other student's work, still with the torn corner, like it was a throw-away, but something the art department salvaged from a pile of discards.
