How can you doubt existence of something which must exist in order to doubt?

I would say either retarded OR lying shitstains who only come here to stir up a shitstorm and use it as a way to claim that their sky daddy exists.

Actually I had long debate with atheists about descartes "I think therefore I am" quote and many indeed do doubt of it's validity which I found strange. How can something which doesn't exist think?

They are unfamiliar with Descartes.

don't be a tard bro..er......imagination bro. I am aware that I am non-existent to an extent that my existence is being used for nefarious reasons by some outside force. I am in fact a bundle of cells used to generate small electrical currents which provide power to them for whatever they need. For that they invented everything there is for me to enjoy in my short or long life. Currently, I am a mid fifties (in a planet called earths years- whatever that means) with a wife who has shunned sex, living with an apparition of a grandkid, and watching a ceiling fan as if blows what feels like cool air across my imaginative face. Life is great as a figment of my imagination. Unfortunately when I am terminated, or die, or am whatever they do when I am done, you will cease to exist as well. Ain't that the shits. You, who don't exist, are determined only by the supplanted imagery given to me by whoever they are....peace out....aw.. fuck off, I hate talking to myself.

No they were not. But I'm not sure if they were trolling or they really think their own existence is uncertain.

If you can prove something that doesn't exist actually exists then you might be on to something.

Do the words double speak mean anything to you? You don't really need a point with double speak as long as people buy the bullshit.

I would say insane, not retarted.  If you don't exist than that hottie doesn't exist, neither does her family, so if you're ted bundy, you might as well act on your desire to rape and murder and necrophilia, cuz you don't exist in the first place!   :rotflmao:

It should be I exist physically and have a brain, therefore I think I am. Who is the I doing the thinking I am? We are conscious beings because we have a material existence, we are conscious which is real, but the we that we think we are is an illusion, but a very persistent one unless you get brain damage or put under anesthesia. This idea of a mind (or soul) without a physical body is the idea that they are separate things when they are not from black and white thinking, just like arguing about inherent or learned behavior, when it can be from both. This is not logical thinking. When we have a pain in our toe, is it in the toe or the mind, or both? The physical world is self evident, the mind or soul without a body is not.   Solitary

This is a very good question because it depends on what is meant by existing and doubt. The existence of something that is physical is self evident, but the existence of mental workings is not unless it is shown to be true from neurology. When you are unconscious do you still exist mentally? Isn't it obvious that in order to think or doubt you have to be conscious mentally and exist physically.  Solitary

Learned about this in philosophy... unfortunately near the beginning of the class, which made it impossible to take anything seriously after that. Such a goofy position to take.

Ultimately it is mental masturbation and I've personally completely lost interest because it has no functional application. And the reason why that is is because ultimately we all have to go back to our lives and live it as if we are NOT brains in a vat.
Those that believe this is an illusion, a la Inception, or a la The Matrix, inevitably end up removing themselves from the gene pool.
Even those people that contemplate "brain in vat" idea must ultimately accept the possibility of being wrong, so putting your head on a railway waiting for the train to run you over in order for you to "wake up" is ultimately a gamble that a smart and reasonable person would choose not to entertain.

So at the end of the day, no matter what your assumptions are, we all go right back to living our lives on the assumption of this reality being real, material, etc. So to the person raising this philosophical argument, I am inclined to say "cool; I am going to go right back to eating my lunch now" and chances are they will do the same.

Well, Hume did deny Descartes claim that because he thinks therefore he is. He denied it because he said we are simply bundles of experience. There is no I.

There are those who make a philosophical point about the self not existing.

So I said to one "if I'm mistaken about my own existence, who is making the mistake?"

They said that was just a verbal trick and wouldn't answer the question.
