Title: Way to go, Florida!
Post by: Valigarmander on April 15, 2014, 04:11:36 PM
(http://freethoughtblogs.com/pharyngula/files/2014/04/badfloridagundeaths.jpg)

This chart from Business Insider (which has since been edited) shows the dramatic effects of Florida's stand-your-ground laws on gun violence. (http://www.businessinsider.com/gun-deaths-in-florida-increased-with-stand-your-ground-2014-2)

Is it just me, or does something about this graph seem... off?

Yep, it is upside down. Here's what it really looks like:

Easy to fudge stats especially when you want to promote a particular agenda. Florida clearly has a dubious agenda. Also consider nationally crime rates have been plumetting since the 90s. It's like saying,  SEE? IT SNOWED, PROOF CLIMATE CHANGE IS A HOAX,

Well the sub title kind of weans it to a different direction, associating stand your ground with murder is an incorrect marriage. Since stand your ground would in effect NOT be murder, they must have fudgered the stats a mite eh?

Imagine how much lower the murder rate would be if there was a war in Florida.

People, the graph clearly indicates that after the stand-your-ground law was passed the crime rate went UP, not down.

Oh I agree, but does it go up because of the law, or did it go up because they added deaths from stand your ground to "murder". Though I can't see that few cases of stand your ground being that much of an impact.

Look at the way the numbers go. The graph is correct, just horribly put together.

I would guess that the number of murders on the graph would include those that were done under the stand-your-ground claim. Is there a correlation between that law and the rise in the crime rate? From the data, you can't make that conclusion. But you can't rule it out, either.

I think it is at least safe to assume that it hasn't done any significant good...

Did they really post that original graph? Wow.

As near as I can tell by the graph, it is only gun deaths.  It doesn't differentiate between offensive and defensive gun uses.

You're comparing apples with oranges: the OP has MURDERS COMMITTED BY GUNS. You have VIOLENT CRIMES.

Nope, guns in the hands of law abiding citizens save lives of law abiding citizens.  The ability of a citizen to defend themselves is a deterrent to violent crime.

Some one busts into my house with a machete, hatchet, knife, brass knuckles, iron pipe, baseball bat, or gun they all pose a serious threat to my life, and will be met with sufficient firepower to stop them, and underlaw I am justified to do so.

England have virtually no guns, so now the medical community is trying to ban long kitchen knives to reduce stabbings.  http://www.frontpagemag.com/2012/dgreenfield/british-doctors-call-for-ban-on-long-kitchen-knives-to-end-stabbings/ (http://www.frontpagemag.com/2012/dgreenfield/british-doctors-call-for-ban-on-long-kitchen-knives-to-end-stabbings/)

If someone wants to kill you or rob you, they will simply choose a different weapon, and if that one is banned, choose another.  Next thing you know little league players will have to pass a background check and register their baseball bat.

The funny part of this is the US has the largest number of armed citizens, yet among democratic countries, they have a very high crime rate , and one the highest number of incarcerates. Go figure.

And most of these people are in prison for non-violent crimes with the vast majority for drugs.  Locking a kid up for having a couple of joints in their possession is beyond stupid, welcome to America.

Only 8% of people sent to prison in 2009 where for violent crimes!

Meanwhile from 1993 - 2011 while gun ownership has increased significantly;
Firearm-related homicides declined 39%, from 18,253 in 1993 to 11,101 in 2011.
Nonfatal firearm crimes declined 69%, from 1.5 million victimizations in 1993 to 467,300 victimizations in 2011.

For every time a gun is used to commit a homicide, a gun is used 80 times to defend the life of a law abiding citizen.

US gun ownership is approximately 88.8 guns for every 100 citizens, yet the US has one of the lowest murder rates in the world.

In the UK (no guns) there are 2,034 violent crimes per 100,000 citizens.
in the US (most guns) there are 466 violent crimes per 100,000 citizens.

I don't know where you've got those numbers? From the NRA??

A survey on wikipedia tells a different story;

Firearm-related death rate per 100,000 population: the US =10.3; the UK = 0.25. That's a ratio of 40 times higher in the US.

Statistics on that, please. The statistics I have seen (and linked) say otherwise.

QuoteUS gun ownership is approximately 88.8 guns for every 100 citizens, yet the US has one of the lowest murder rates in the world.

Stop pulling shit out your ass, cowboy.

http://www.rawstory.com/rs/2013/09/16/u-s-murder-rate-higher-than-nearly-all-other-developed-countries-fbi-data/

QuoteBut the 2012 murder rate â€" 4.7 murders per 100,000 people â€" was significantly higher than in most other wealthy nations.

The comparable rate is 0.4 in Japan, 0.8 in Germany, 1.0 in Australia 1.1 in France and 1.2 in Britain, according to figures compiled by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development.

Among nations assessed by the Paris-based club of market economies, only Brazil, Estonia, Mexico and Russia had higher murder rates.

You are a fucking liar through and through, cowboy. I don't know if it's intentional or you are just misinformed, but you might want to check what you are saying before you go touting it so arrogantly as fact and making a complete fool of yourself. I'll take being a "libtard" over just a plain moron anyday.

Let me guess; we also have the best medical system in the world (pre-Obamacare) and we shit exceptionalism in every field.

Did you read the report fully or just the parts that you like?

Here's a more complete report from bjs.gov

Crime Against Persons with Disabilities, 2009â€"2012

Highlights:

-Persons age 12 or older who had disabilities experienced 1.3 million nonfatal violent crimes in 2012.

- In 2012, the age-adjusted rate of violent victimization for persons with disabilities (60 per 1,000 persons with disabilities) was nearly three times the rate among persons without disabilities (22 per 1,000 persons without disabilities).

- In 2012, the age-adjusted rate of violent victimization was higher for persons with disabilities than for those without disabilities for both males and females.

- For each racial group measured, persons with disabilities had higher age-adjusted violent victimization rates than persons without disabilities in 2012.

- In 2012, 52% of nonfatal violent crime against persons with disabilities involved victims who had multiple disability types.

Hate Crime Victimization, 2004â€"2012

Highlights:

- An estimated 293,800 violent and property hate crime victimizations occurred in 2012 against persons age 12 or older residing in U.S. households.

- Victims perceived that over half (51%) of hate crimes were motivated by ethnicity bias in 2012, which was higher than the percentage in 2011 (30%) and 2004 (22%).

- The percentage of hate crimes motivated by religious bias nearly tripled from 10% in 2004 to 28% in 2012, while the percentage of hate crimes motivated by gender bias more than doubled from 12% to 26% during the same period.

- An estimated 60% of hate crime victimizations were not reported to police in 2012. This was a slight decline from 2011, when about three-quarters (74%) of hate crime victimizations were not reported to police.

- The percentage of hate crimes involving violence increased from 78% in 2004 to 90% in 2011 and 2012.

- The rate of violent hate crime against Hispanics more than tripled from 0.6 per 1,000 persons age 12 or older in 2011 to 2.0 per 1,000 in 2012.

- In 2012, the offender had a weapon in at least 24% of violent hate crime victimizations, and the victim sustained an injury in 20% of violent hate crime victimizations.

Sexual Victimization Reported by Adult Correctional Authorities

Highlights:

- Correctional administrators reported 8,763 allegations of sexual victimization in prisons, jails, and other adult correctional facilities in 2011, a statistically significant increase over the number of allegations reported in 2009 (7,855) and 2010 (8,404).

- About half of all allegations (51%) involved nonconsensual sexual acts (the most serious, including penetration) or abusive sexual contacts (less serious, including unwanted touching, grabbing, and groping) of inmates with other inmates. Nearly half (49%) involved staff sexual misconduct (any sexual act directed toward an inmate by staff) or sexual harassment (demeaning verbal statements of a sexual nature) directed toward inmates.

- In 2011, 902 allegations of sexual victimization (10%) were substantiated (i.e., determined to have occurred upon investigation). The total number of substantiated incidents has not changed significantly since 2005 (885).

- Victims were physically injured in 18% of substantiated incidents of inmate-on-inmate sexual victimization, compared to less than 1% of incidents of staff-on-inmate victimization.

- More than half (54%) of all substantiated incidents of staff sexual misconduct and a quarter (26%) of all incidents of staff sexual harassment were committed by female staff.

- Overall, more than three-quarters (78%) of staff perpetrators were fired or resigned. Nearly half (45%) were arrested, referred for prosecution, or convicted.

Federal Justice Statistics

Highlights:

- Suspects arrested and booked for federal supervision violations increased 91%, from 12,716 arrests in 1994 to 24,344 arrests in 2010.

- Five federal law enforcement agencies referred 77% of suspects prosecuted in U.S. district court in 2010.

- In 2010, non-U.S. citizens comprised 47% of suspects charged in U.S. district court, 26% of offenders in federal prison, and 5% of offenders on post-conviction supervision.

- Immigration was the most prevalent offense at arrest and investigation in 2010.

- Drug offenses were the most prevalent offense among defendants sentenced to prison, in prison at yearend, and on supervised release in the community.

- Ninety-one percent of felons charged in U.S. district court in 2010 were disposed by a guilty plea.

- In 2010, immigration (88%), violent (86%), and drug trafficking (84%) offenders were more likely to be detained prior to case disposition.
At yearend 2010, over 400,000 federal offenders were under some form of correctional control.

- Fourteen percent of the 59,391 offenders released from federal prison in 2008 returned to federal prison within three years of release.
Among those offenders who were released from federal prison in 2008 and returned within three years, 59% returned for a supervision violation and 39% returned for a new offense.
