Title: tabletop games
Post by: PickelledEggs on February 28, 2014, 04:12:55 PM
A new thread for tabletop games.

I personally haven't played one in years, but I figure it might be a nice thread to discuss and share your table top gaming stuff/times.

Here is my space marine army, btw. Small. and I haven't gone back to finish repainting them in about 7 or 8 years, but I still have em!

p.s. Please excuse my dusty hat.

I've never played table top games, but I did used to play with the Risk pieces on the Life board.

I love the idea of tabletops, but the reality of buying, painting, and storing miniatures gives me the willies.  Props to the the people who have that kind of talent/disposable income, though.  A big guilty pleasure of mine is Banter Batrep.  They post videos of some matches, and it really does seems great.

But if were to make an army, I know exactly which Legion I would go with...

Edit:  My second pick is Thousand Sons (//http://forums.relicnews.com/showthread.php?94136-Heavily-Converted-Daemon-Prince-P.4-Thousand-Sons).

I've got a load of probably 12 year old space marines in a box somewhere along with a load of scenery I used to make.  :rollin:

I really used to enjoy looking at scrap items around the house and coming up with cool things to turn them into. Polystyrene packaging not only comes in cool shapes which when painted look like weird industrial shapes etc. but can easily be cut with a knife to make bunkers etc.

yeah. I wish I had millions of dollars to spend on space marine figures. It's just too much money. Maybe down the road, I'll start slowly building my army again.

I also wanted to share this. I have never been so entertained by people playing board games. I've been watching this youtube series for about a year now and can say it's one of my favorite things (on the computer or tv) to watch.

btw, I actually met Chris Hardwick in a Starbucks last year. He's a really nice guy.

Look on ebay...there are always people selling whole armies and un-assembled, unwanted gifts etc.
If you just want to play the game for little outlay that's the easiest way...

I went and looked at the Games Workshop website about a year ago to look at pieces for my army. This is a ridiculously and unnecessarily large army, but....

I don't even know how many months it would take me to assemble all of those. and then how many years it would take to paint them all.  :rollin:

Oh God, the Smurfs.  I suppose it doesn't really matter for the tabletop, but in the lore the Ultramarines are colossal jerks to other Legions (surpassed only by the Space Wolves) - especially to the Word Bearers and Alpha Legion.  The surprisingly fecund Chapter is somehow enviable and detestable at the same time.  Never forget Eskrador.

Chess is a tabletop game ... right?

I guess so? If we're counting boardgames, I have an entire book cabinet full of those.  I have also have a bunch of roleplaying game books.

I never got into wargaming because I don't have the patience to paint those things and because they're way too expensive.

I'd say no. Being a tabletop game means you don't necessarily need a board to play it on.

The tyranids are pretty cool.  My roommate loves them almost as much as he loves the Orks.

If I were to play I'd probably pick Space Marines (Space wolves or Blood Ravens, maybe ultramarines), chaos (Alpha Legion or Word Bearers) or Orks

Technically, all games designed to play on a table (hence the name) are board games - including card games and board games like chess.

But people tend to use the term to refer to wargames like WH40K or tabletop RPGs like D&D.  It's all very confusing.

Has anyone ever played "Fluxx"?

It's probably one of my favorite games ever.

I've played a few versions of fluxx. They're usually funny if you just need some lighthearted and quick games. Good material for playing with people you don't know very well or if you just want to chill out with friends. I tend to prefer the themed versions over the base game.

Regardless, I like it rather a lot even though I very rarely play it.

When I was into it over a decade ago Space Marines were a good race to play as as a beginner as their infantry are relatively tough and they are very tactically versatile. I believe this is still the case.
A standard tactical squad of infantry can be kitted out to fight other infantry, fight reasonably well at close quarters, or be given so heavy weapons to engage armour and heavy infantry at range, all while not actually being that easy to kill. Can't go wrong with them really and a tactical squad of marines is pretty much capable of being a pain in the enemy's arse no matter what they're being used for or who they are fighting.

Other armies are harder to start with as their various units are often a bit more specialised or have more pronounced weaknesses and strengths for example imperial guard have great armour and their infantry squads are fielded in large numbers, however they have to field large numbers as individual infantrymen are comparatively lightly armed and fragile.

Can't see the link as it asks me to choose my country, however, GW's prices, at least in the UK, are extremely high. They were high in the late 90s/ very early 2000s but holy shit.
Honestly, buy on ebay, at least on UK ebay there are tonnes of unopened or opened but never assembled box sets for a fraction of the cost.

Wouldn't mind having a game with some people really but oh well.

Yeah that full space marine set is $11,500 in USD. Convert that to whatever currency you use and it will still be a ridiculous price.

A space marine tactical squad costs the equivalent of 41.58 U.S. dollars here.

I just came across this really cool site that offers a virtual tabletop for your table top needs. I think it's pretty nifty.
